I just got the Bucilla "Light of the World" cross stitch kit. My problem is that there are so many similar colors I can't figure out which is which. I thought that the yards amount on the chart would help (I was hoping that it meant that, that was the number of strands included) but it doesn't seem to coenside at all. Like white is an obvious color, in the chart is says 4 yards, but I have only 2 strands of it, the light blue says I should have 4 yards but I have only 1 strand and I have another darker blue that isn't even mentioned on the list

Please help, how do I sort these colors?

By any chance is there a page that lists all their colors with a photo of it, name, and/or number, it wouldn't be 100% accurate but should help at least some.

last night in my search, I noticed that they now have pre sorted colors, I wish this one was one of them.

It doesn't bring a numbered chart to follow? That's odd.

question?? the names given on that conversion chart, are they the DMC names for the colors or the Bucilla names for the colors???

It gave a numbered chart but all the colors are together in a single hank and I am now trying to figure out which color belongs with which symbol. I might just give up with these colors and use the DMC conversion chart and use just the DMC floss for this, I could use this floss for smocking or embroidery or something.

Im sure it the DMC.

Upon occasion, color names can vary. So, I think it is the number that counts. I also recently had a kit that said they were using DMC numbers, but the thread included might not actually be DMC. In this instance it didn't prove to be a problem. For sorting threads be sure to be in a really good light. Daylight is the best. Also, the strand might be a 2 yard strand or more , so 2 strands would be 4 yards, or more. I'm working with a kit now that had really long strands of floss. Good Luck.

Why do manufacturers do this? When they lump all the threads together and then expect the buyer to automatically know which colour is which. Some of those shades can be pretty close.
It takes a lot of work to complete a project, as we all know, and the thought of spoiling it because the threads were not pre - sorted makes me boil.
The kits can be expensive. You shouldn't have to replace the thread from your own stash and consequently spending more money.

When i brought my first kit, i made a mistake, and had to about 60% of my work. Which ment had to use some of the threads from my stash. Upon having a closer look, i found that the thread in the kit was slightly lighter than my own thread. So i looked at all the other colours and they where lighter to.
So i went back to the shop that my wife brought it from. Only to find that most of there cross stitch kits where on display in the window. And judging by how the packaging on some of them where faded, they had been in there for a decent amount of time. So i figured that if the sun can make the packaging fade over time, it can do the same to the threads inside the packaging. So now whenever i buy a kit, i always replace the threads for threads from my own stash. just in case.

I totally agree--which is why I rarely bother with kits--there's just too much hassle with them--if they are presorted that does help a lot!!!

I would love to not deal with kits, but I have yet to find patterns that I like in the pattern sections, I don't care for cutsie designs and that's all the stores ever have outside of the kits.

That is why online is often the best place to find patterns. I work from other old charts that I bought when there were LNS's near me, or when the big chains had a wide variety of books and charts. I guess that is why HAED is so attractive now (besides the designs) as well as "shops" like 123 Stitch. There is no variety in the stores at all.

I have done a search online for patterns and haven't really found what I like, is there a list of different sites somewhere that shows the websites that have cross stitch patterns.

This thread is in the Wanted Section. We have added to it over the years and I don't have the time to go through and remove sites that are no longer available but most of these should still work.

I agree that finding yourself with one large hank of threads isn't very helpful.

Presumably the kit included a list of all the colours or numbers? Crucially, does it give the number of lengths of each colour? I remember that this was a lifesaver in the past when it came to separating out colours similar in tone or hue. For example, it might say something like light red (6), medium red (5).
