Metallics are always a pest to deal with

! I've used DMC light effects, krenik and RG Petite Treasure Braid - with shorter lengths and Thread Heaven they do behave, I've found Treasure Braid the tamest - but that's just my opinion! There isn't much difference in appearance - though most stitchers despise DMC metallics - I expect more will come along and put in their 2 cents/penneth worth!

I have a few DMC Light Effects and they're a nightmare! I have some kreinik for a HAED but haven't tried working with it yet.

Between the two- I prefer Kreinik. But like Ms. MilkyBar Kid, I prefer Rainbow Gallery Petite Treasure Braid over both DMC and Kreinik. Its a bit harder to find- but worth the search. (I've seen limited colors of Kreinik at large chain craft stores, but I've only seen Rainbow Gallery at needlework shops)
The one project I used DMC on had about 50 stitches. I threw out my skein when I was done and said never again. I struggled to get those 50 stitches- felt like I was working on it for weeks.
I've used Kreinik #4 a few times on different projects. Its a bit stiff and wirey but doesn't shred and stretch like DMC does. On my current project I tried using #4 and it just was not working- bumpy, not laying right, just sort of a mess. It is 18 ct and when I've used Kreinik before, its been on larger counts.
So I switched it out for Rainbow Gallery Petite Treasure Braid. It isn't wiry at all, its a flat braid. Much easier to work with. Still have to tie it to my needle and tough to thread a beading needle with, but between the 3, I think this will be the brand I will switch to when working on a pattern that calls for metallics.

I don't love any of them, but I haven't tried the petite braid. I prefer Kreinik to the DMC metallics but find that if I add it to regular DMC it works better. usually 2strands DMC and 1 Kreinik and I use shorter lengths to keep the Kreinik from knotting or breaking. Besides that it is easier to stitch I like the softer effect it has. I have used it a lot because of the angel and fairy afghans I have done. Sometimes I use the Kreinik by itself and that is when I use the language I used back in my college days. Next time I will search for a Rainbow Gallery and also see if Thread Heaven works (need to order it). and I think Mrs MBK is right that a lot more will be along to put their penneth in.

Thanks for all your comments. I want to stitch the dragon that is in the Bewitching cross stitch book by Joan Elliot and there is an awful lot of metallics in it. Just wanted to know what you all thought. Will let you know what I decide. Ann

I do NOT recommend DMC metallic threads at all!! They are a nightmare!! Even with the thread heaven they are not at all easy to deal with. The kreinik threads are much better, but I must be honest and say that the Rainbow Gallery metallic threads are far superior--I just have to order mine online as no stores locally carry them!

I would avoid DMC metallic at all cost it is a terrible thread to use in large quantities. Krenik is a good friend to me and I us alot in the angels I have done. And Glissen Gloss Metallics are good to work with as well.
