Hello from Finnish Lapland

Hi,
I'm a Brit who has lived in Finnish Lapland for the last four years. I'm new to the forum but not to stitching - I've been working from counted cross stitch kits on and off for many years. The largest thing I've ever stitched was a Disney Winnie-the-Pooh height chart for my niece, which took me 6 months. At the moment I've got a kit of the Carew Cross waiting.
I get supplies either by ordering online or picking them up when I make the 400 mile round trip to the nearest city. I'm setting out on one of those tomorrow, so today is for checking and re-checking the shopping list!
I picked up a general interest in needlework as a child from my mother. She taught me knitting and dressmaking. I had to teach myself crochet, though, as she's left-handed and I'm right-handed. Regrettably I haven't touched my sewing machine for years
When I can get outdoors I ride a Harley and ski and snowshoe in this wonderful scenery as much as I can.
Looking forward to talking to you and hoping this will encourage me to get a bit more adventurous with my projects

Hello and welcome from South Carolina. So glad that you found us. And you will definitely found all the encouragement you want (and maybe more!) from us. I have learned and tried more new things in the months I have been here than in all the years before, I think.
Love to see photos of your work too. Hope you have a great trip for stash tomorrow. How often do you manage one of those shopping trips? I imagine your list has to be pretty complete since there is no such thing as "running to the store for what you missed", which is something I often have to do.

Thanks very much
Not working on anything just now, but I have a 10" x 3" kit of Carew Cross, an ancient stone celtic cross near Carew Castle in West Wales. I got this as a present as I really like the location.

Thanks for the welcome
I get to do one of these trips about 3 times a year, with a couple of trips to Turku (in the south of Finland, 1,000 mile round trip), thrown in. After 4 years I'm nearly used to the discipline!
I recently splashed out on a DMC floss colour card by mail order. It's been really helpful putting together my list this time. I predict less of the "hit and hope" or "buy the whole store just in case" approach

Well, it certainly sounds like you are well organized. I can't imagine living so far from anything. It would certainly be a different way (for me) to live. Keep in touch. Enjoy the shopping. How long do you stay? Certainly more than a day.

Hello and welcome. What a fabulous place to live. Not much to do so lots of time to stitch......perfect. (Sorry if I'm wrongly presuming it's very quiet there) Hope your shopping trip goes well and you are laden with stitchy goodies when you get back.

Hi & Welcome from Australia, way down under, whilst you are way up north.
How wonderful to have you on the forum and I am sure we will all be most interested in your long distance shopping trip when you get back home. I just can't imagine being that far from (so called) civilisation and all the crafting supplies.

400 miles! You really do have to triple check your list! (knowing me, I would forget something important)

Thanks again to everybody for the very warm welcome.
I got safely back from my trip with all planned additions to my stash and without hitting any reindeer (common problem at this time of year in the dusk). I got something of a shock when I went to my usual supplier, who didn't have everything on my list. She pointed me to the art supplies shop. I'd been there a few times, but never noticed they have both a complete set of DMC threads and aida fabric!
I'm planning designs of some local scenes with my new stash. In the winter it actually gets very busy around here as tourism is a very big industry (second only to reindeer herding). It will get a lot quieter again in May.
