Ryukai's HAED Alternative Reality SAL update! 12-7-11

I'm starting my first HAED!

http://heavenandearthdesigns.com/index. ... cts_id=725

I'm doing it on 28ct monaco over 1.

I've already had some trouble. 1 over 1 on the monaco isn't giving good enough coverage in the dark areas, but 2 over 1 is way too bulky. Any suggestions?

I'll post pictures once I have something to post.

Another brave soul doing a J Wall for their first HAED :applesauce: :applesauce: ! I don't know if you test stitched on other counts of fabric before you went with 28 1 over 1? If it is too bulky with 2 over 1 on 28ct - 25ct 2 over 1 may be the better coverage for you? Did you consider tent stitching - I'm tenting 2 over 1 on 28ct for a HAED SK and the coverage is fine, but then I know tenting is not for everyone. It may be worth considering your fabric choices, if you haven't already, as you want to be happy with your work especially as it will take a while to stitch!

Hope you solve your problem - it is a really lovely piece and I look forward to seeing your WIPs!

That is a lovely design and quite a challenge too. I am doing my LOTR on 25 ct 2 over 1 and it is also a bit bulky but needed for the coverage also. I had, like you tried 1 over 1 at first and tent stitches but the black just wouldn't cover right. If you haven't gotten real far Mrs MBK's suggestion of trying a lower count fabric may make sense. I am really looking forward to your updates on this one. I just love the colors.

congrats on your new haed.I have totally fell in love with mine. i have worked on 25 and 27 count. the 25 i have some problems with show through(as i only use 1 strand and 2 to me is to thick) the 27 for me however seems almost perfect. A lot has to do with the tension of your stitches. but i would not worry to much. sit it across the room from you and see if you notice the show through. i cant on my 25 count, so i don't think you will. remember that will be the usual distance you look at your design from, not a distance of 5 inch while you stitch.

After much thought I decided to stick with the 28ct 1 over 1. Like mcewan07 said, I won't always be looking at it from so close and from more than a foot away the coverage is fine. Any large gaps I've been filling with a mini backstitch. After about 1,000 stitches this is where we are.

It's amazing that so many stitches barely covers anything at all, but still gets all that detail! I've never worked on anything higher than 18ct, so this has been interesting. And soo much confetti! Seems like the J Wall's are 80% confetti!

:applesauce: great start and the coverage looks really good. It is amazing how many stitches go into what seems like a small area when doing these. I also am surprised when I am doing a lot of confetti and then all of a sudden can see that it is making a real detailed picture. I am looking forward to your updates.

Lovely start. I found 1 over 1 on 28 ct was fine for coverage on my TW christmas ornaments and as others have said, once you're looking at it from framing distance, it really won't show.

Why is your hoop backwards? OMG have I been doing it backwards all this time? Your hoop looks backwards (inside out) to me... if it is backwards, why do you do it that way... does it smush the stitches less?
If it's not backwards, let me know that I've been doing it wrong for years gently.
PS. that pattern is AMAZING.

No, the hoop is backwards. It's something I've been experimenting with, because I was using a spare piece of monaco fabric I had and the stitching is soo close to the edge of it. This way when I run the end of the thread under the back it doesn't hit the hoop and I don't have to loosen and re-adjust all the time. Once I'm further in I won't have to be backwards. >>; But I find that I like it. It also makes it harder for the cat to sit on it.

On with the update! I made it to the bottom of the first page!!

It's fun to watch the picture come together from the confetti. Lucky for me though there's some sections of solid stitching coming up. I'm really liking the HAED!
