what do you do typically to finish a smaller item, something that you don't want to frame? I made this beautiful Mother mary and baby Jesus but have no clue what to do to it now. I was thinking of maybe making it into a pillow but I want to get other ideas.
she's about 4" X 6" (my best guess, I'm to lazy to get my tape measure right now)
Also, other than just this, I have other finished and in progress items that I really have no idea what I am going to do with them, so would love other finishing ideas, ideas that are affordable I should add.
Given the size, I think your Madonna and Child would be an excellent candidate for a book cover. There's an great thread covering the "how to" on that finishing here on the board.

4 x 6ish size.. about the size of a photo (I can't see exactly what the design is.. work computers- can't see a lot of images) I would make it into a pillow. Edge it with fabric to make it larger- about a 10x10 size. Or I also like the suggestion to turn it into a book/bible cover.
If you want to display it, but not frame it I would do a Flatfold. This is from the same blog that Mrs. MBK posted (btw, thanks for posting that again. I'd lost the link).

I think I might make a cover for a journal and give it to my niece or sister for christmas, I just need to find a decently priced hard cover journal for it.
