Boats At Saintes-Maries - Update 05/02/2012

I started my first Maia kit this week - Boats At Saintes-Maries. I am very disappointed with the chart. It's very detailed but very small and no way could I comfortably work with it - and it's coloured with the same symbols used in different colours which I don't like. I've had to colour photocopy and enlarge it all before I could even get started

On the plus side, the thread is all pre-sorted and ready to go, except for a few where they have included full skeins of colour.
Here's where I got to a few days ago:
I have done quite a bit more now, so will update the photo tomorrow when I have some decent light.

very pretty colors in this one. I'm looking forward to your next update. I hate when charts are like that!

The colors are beautiful!

I agree with the Maia charts, they confuse me sometimes!

Looks like a good start and the colors in this design are lovely.

I agree that charts that use the same symbol but in different colors are so hard to read. I hope tha the shades aren't too close. Enlarging is about the only option available.

Interested to see this one as I have wanted to do a Maia because there are some beautiful designs but having browsed in a shop at the kits it put me off as I didn't like the look of the chart so I will be interested to see how you get on.
Looking good so far.

My last kit was a maia and i ended up paying to have it colour photocopied and blown up so i could both see it and cross it off as i went along, on the plus side the material supplied was generous as were the amount of threads.
Would love to see a pic of what it will look like when complete and think you have made a wonderful start with it .

That's a lovely design. Shame about the chart!
I've got a Maia kit I won in a free draw comp.. I've not looked at the chart yet!
*rushes off to find kit!*
Hmm! Not too bad but the backstitch looks a nightmare!!
It's this one.

That is going to be lovely. I hope you can get along with the chart now that it is larger.
I hate when designers use very similar symbols. It just goes to show that they never stitch the design when they are finished with the pattern.

I have a pattern I am working on right now it only has 23 colors but 4 of the symbols are so alike you have to go to the picture on the cover to see what is the right one.

Getting on fine with the chart now that I've enlarged it
Stitching lots and lots of sky, but it's all in tent stitch, so it's coming along quite quickly.

That is looking lovely. And you have made a lot of progress so far. And I'm glad that it is easier to see now that you have enlarged the chart. I hate when they either use shades to denote differences or use differenty sizes (like a big circle vs a medium circle vs a small circle)for different colors too. You have found a way around it and it shows. You are doing a great job.

Beautiful!

I think I might be tempted to invent my own symbols for the chart. But If there is a lot of colours it might be harder , and more time consuming, than it sounds.
