I have quit a few needles knocking around in a tin and need a 28 for my next project. Is there a simple way of telling if one is a 28? I probably should be more organised with my needles!
I have a feeling I may have asked this before but forgive me I have baby brain :/

I don't have an answer but love your question. I have 28's, 26's and 24's all thrown together now. plus packages of Susan Bates needles that have numbers like 1,2,3,4 and 5. and I think some DMC's that had numbers like that too. I just have gotten to where I use what fits. I know that is bad (why?) so I am subscribing to this thread so I don't miss the answers.

I have a jumble of needles as well. Some are easy- my 22's and such for hardanger. For the rest I just roll them in my fingers. A 28 is the smallest needle I have.. and well, if I grab a 26, eh close enough.

Funny you should ask... I just today recieved my order from Nordic Needle!
The 28 needles are "sharper" than the 26's and of course, thinner.
I measured lengths & this is how it went with what I have on hand --
John James Platinum 26: 38 mm
John James Platinum 28: 33 mm
Piecemakers 26: 33 mm
Piecemakers 28: 30 mm
DMC 28: 32 mm (didn't have a 26 & this is my least favorite! Purchased locally)
I usually use JJ 26 for everything, but I'm also stitching on 32, 36 or 28 ct most of the time (2 over 2) so it's the correct size. I ordered the 28 needles to try out on the 25 ct (2 over 1) for my HAED, and haven't had a chance to see how they work yet. Hope this helps out!

LOL my tapestry teacher says re the above "well there was until John James did petites" and whilst the swearing is silent you can still hear it clearly

I would just tip them out and pick one that looked the smallest, but that's because I'm lazy.

i tend to keep different needles in separate match boxes, I know they take some space but oh well I do not get confused. What you can do, is separate them according to size, cos you will be able to tell the difference and go from there
