Crochet with plastic bag yarn

Post by agi »

When I was a child, my grandma and mom used to crochet doormats from the plastic bags they used to sell milk in. Yes, I know, it was before Tetrapack, but they still use it in some places

Anyway, when I saw this website I said I wanted some for my balcony, but then realised I have no yarn to use for this. So I decided to use plastic bags cut into stripes. Then I thought I wanted something that would hang on the rails of my balcony on both sides. And voila:

and the other side:

Then I just had to make a pot, too :) Just finished, will buy some geraniums tomorrow to plant in it.

And perhaps you want to see the old washbasin we found in the forest on a walk. It has a hole, so it is perfect for a pot

Looks great! I'm about to start a plarn (plastic yarn) crochet project - I'm just collecting the bags and making my plarn in readiness. Going ot make a nice, strong tote bag for shopping. :)

Agi they are fabulous and what a brilliant idea to use those bags up. Well done and you have planted some of my favourite flowers too. Love all the pansy/viola faces so gorgeous. Then too geraniums hold a special place for me as a memory of my dear aunt.

Great work :applesauce: :stars:  :balloons:

Great idea for the balcony and I love the pot too.
I have been crocheting for years using plastic bags I started out making place mats and seat covers for outdoor use many years ago for an Earth Day project, than I started making tote bags to use while shopping.

I think somewhere I have some placemats woven from plastic bread bags. I think I've seen some other items also. I really like the plant pot to hang on a rail. I wonder if anyone else has ideas. This is a prettygood way to use up those bags.

These could soon be rare items as many supermarkets are cutting back on plastic carrier bags.

Useful and a great way of recycling plastic. Well done Agi! :applesauce:

The BIGGEST thing I saw made from carrier bags was a ground sheet for a caravan awning....now someone had Waaaaay to much time on their hands!!
