Just curious really, my mum always told me to start in the middle and I found this easiest but I had a kit once that told me to start with border and I have hard of various different places to start. So though i'd ask where other people start and what do you find best?

I think it just depends on the project! Many start from the middle but some larger ones are easier to start from say top left if there are a few pages of pattern. I guess its personal preference!

I totally agree with Amanda. It's a personal preference and depends on the project. My MO is to find a distinctive block of color or shape to serve as an anchor. I double or triple check its positioning, get it stitched and the build off of it as a reference.

Top left. I started in the middle when I first began cross stitching, but when I began to stich afghans, top left helped me to maintain the spacing I needed. So it was natural when I began my HAED addiction to begin in the top left. I do start in the middle if I am stitching over 2 on 25 or higher count fabric, like with the Lizzie Kates. What works is what feels right for you. There aren't any rules in cross stitch. Only preferences.

For samplers and the like and super big projects that come in a booklet form I tend to start at the top left.

For almost everything else including patters that are just a few pages I tend to start in the centre.

if there isn't a definite border or edge, I start in in the middle, otherwise I do the border first.

I will add to the consensus that it is personal preference. But what I do is I usually start in the centre and work my way out. I changed that a bit when I started my tiger project and I wanted room above his head so I started in the middle at the bottom, worked my way all across and then started my way up.
