Hello!

I am new to this and I would like to start "Computer Wizard" by Randal Spangler and it is very large. I am looking to buy a standing frame for it but I don't know which kinds are better. I have a small Q snap that I like but it won't work for such a large design. The piece will finish about 21"x30". Does anyone have any recommendations?

What size Q-snap do you have? I use my 11x11 frame for about 90% of my work. I have the larger ones, but rarely use them. I just move the work about in the frame. I've never had a problem with stitched areas being damaged by the Q-snap. I put a strip of medium weight muslin between the stitched areas and the clamp as a precaution. I know some people use felt and some nothing at all.

EDIT: Sorry, just noticed you were really asking about floor stands. Can't help with that. I still haven't broken down and bought one.

Good advice there. I have a 17x17 Qsnap, which is also ok, but slightly difficult to handle. I'm using a 9x11 on parts of the tapestry of Scotland panel, and it doesn't leave a mark.

I can fix my Qsnap onto my floor stand, which is a "StitchSmart" Floorstand. Some people swear by Lowry stands, which are pricy, but you only pay once. I find floorstands really useful, and wouldn't happily stitch for long periods away from mine by choice.

I guess I have two Q snaps. Oops...one is 8" and the other is probably 11" but I am having problems holding the larger one and working with it at the same time. They also aren't holding the tension as much as I would like and I am afraid of damaging my stitches. I was thinking that a floor stand would be easier for a larger project.

I will look into all of those brands. I might try a scroll one but I also like the idea of something I can clip my current frames on. I guess I have some more research to do.

Just something to consider if you do opt for a scroll they only hold on the top and bottom the sides are left loose. I could never get along with them as I hated the tension I wanted something tighter all around. But I also don't get along with any stand that I have tried so far, they just don't set right for me. I love q-snaps and find the tension on them wonderful. But we are all different with our expectations.

I had that problem when I started using scroll frames, but then I started using stitch clips (http://www.nordicneedle.com/prod/6934.html" target="_blank) and they really help keep the tension more even (the straps are a bit short, but you can extend them by sewing some velcro on). I think they're only available in the US, which is a pain, but I could't be without mine now.

I'm busily taking notes on all the suggestions when I click on the link for the stitch clips and see the price. LOL, these look just like the clips I use to hold my fitted sheets on the bed. I'm pretty sure I only paid a couple dollars for them. I see an engineering project in my future.

I have a friend taking a look at the Needlework System 4 for me (none of my local shops carry it). I can always let you know what she thinks. I want the travel version since I will likely be hauling it to the in-laws regularly.
