Help

Post by gothgran »

Help please

I have a new Companions cross stitch (Heaven and Earth Designs) which is done either on linen 25 count or Evenweave 18 count. Unfortunately my eyesight isn't good enough for either of these. Could anyone tell me what count in Aida it would be. I can just about manage a 20 count Aida if this would work. There is a choice of 1 or 2 thread. I would like to do it in single thread as it is a quite delicate looking fairy.

Hope someone can rescue me.

Ann :(

You can stitch a HAED design on any fabric you choose - I've seen stitched on everything from 14 count aida to 40 count linen! You just need to enter the stitch count into a calculator like this one which will tell you the size of the fabric you need. As to whether to go with one or two strands it's up to you, but I've stitched them on 18 count and used two strands of thread - just do a little test patch on the fabric of your choice to see what works best for you!

Keep us posted on your progress!

You can choose any Aida count that you are comfortable stitching. What will change is the size of your piece. If you can "just manage" 20 ct, you might think about 18 ct. I have seen examples of 14 ct Aida being used. I would think that using 1 thread might not give you the best coverage on anything that is 20 ct or lower, so I would suggest testing it out on a piece of fabric before you really get started. Not making the right choice can really lead you into problems later on (I know since I have just purchased fabric and thread to restart an HAED that I had more than 6 pages finished because of making a wrong decision for me in the beginning). I tried to get to the HAED website to see what the count on your piece is but the website seems down for now, probably because its the last day of the 45% off sale. If you want to know how big the piece will be for the different sizes, this Cross Stitch Calculator will help you figure it out.
You might want to check out the HAED BB for Stitched fabric samples also.

This might be an obvious solution and something you already have, but have you invested in a magnifier of any sort? I swear by mine -- couldn't contemplate stitching any hardanger, nevermind my HAED, without it. They don't have to be too expensive... and Christmas is coming... :snowman:

Amanda and Carole, many thanks for your help, things are a bit clearer now. I can get on and make a start......Serinde, thanks for the suggestion, but, I have an eye defect that precludes me from using a magnifying glass of any sort. .......I have bought some 18ct Aida and will work from there........Keep an eye out for progress in the New Year... :ribbit: ..Ann
