Three strands on 28 ct lugana?

Post by karenstitches »

Hi all. I'm going a very dense, very large (200x200 stitch) pattern on 28-ct lugana. I absolutely love this fabric, but I find that two strands doesn't give me the coverage I want, even when I railroad and watch my tension. I'm thinking of using three strands instead. Anyone tried this? Any recommendations for or against? Thanks!

The only advice that I can give is try with 3 stands and see how it looks. And if you happy with it, stick to it.

Good luck! :shamrock:

Like Heidi says - if it looks good to you then go for it, as long as you are happy it doesn't matter what anyone else says! I've never felt the need to use 3 strands on 28ct (I stitch over 2 mainly on 28 & 32 count), but I don't have a very tight tension and I would be loathed to give up my looped start with 3 strands! If I didn't like the coverage I would change the fabric count to 32 - but that's just me! What is the design you are stitching?

Same advice here. If you like it and it works for you, do it. I personally found that 2 strands full crosses on 25 ct was too bulky, but others have not problem so I imagine it is my tension. On 28 ct lugana I like 2 strands tent stitching. But again, I try to keep my tension not real tight and I love the coverage. Still, others might not. I would test a fair amount (at least 2 or 3 10 x 10 blocks with full color and then some confetti thrown in so you get a good sense of how easy or difficult the stitching will be. And I'm curious like Amanda as to what design you are stitching?

I'm stitching Gecko Rouge's "Domesticats," which is a replication of artwork by Kerry Beary. Here' the link:

Thanks for the advice. I'm going to try using three just to see how I like it.

I think it all depends on your tension. So if you're not happy with your coverage, try 3 strands and see what it feels and looks like.

I'm usually happy with the coverage on 14 ct and 28 ct using two strands, and I do my HAEDs 2 x 1 tent on 25ct, like Sarah does, while others feel they need to go to 28ct to tent with 2 strands.

That's what's weird about this, though: on 16 ct aida I get perfect coverage with two over 1, so I don't know why I wouldn't get good coverage with 2 over 2 on lugana. I'll let y'all know how it turns out. :D

Size wise, 2 over 2 on 28ct lugana is equivalent to 2 over 1 on 14ct aida, if you want the equivalent to 16ct aida 2 over 1 you would need to use a 32ct fabric for your perfect coverage.

Thanks, Amanda! That makes perfect sense, but I never would've thought of it myself.

I just testing 3 over 2 on the lugana, and it's much better. The holes aren't overly crowded so I can still manuever, and it gives the stitches a nice "pillow"/poofy quality. :) Thanks, everyone!

Of course, now I'm frogging two hours' worth of stitching (the 2 over 2 I've already done), but that's the way it goes.

Karen, I've done 3 over 2 on 28ct without any problems. It gives a really nice effect imo. Good luck with the frogging and restitching. Also, it's nice to see someone else working on a Gecko Rouge design. :D Looking forward to watching you stitch this one up.

Brandi,
Thanks! What Gecko Rouge have you done/are you doing? Don't you love the mid-century modern style??? Been to your blog. Really nice. Keep it up! Karen

I'm working on Sephina's Secret. I've got a SAL thread for it on here if you want to take a look at my progress on it.

Thanks. :D I'm working on the second part of my 2012 completed works, which I hope to post tomorrow, and it's got about as many projects as the bookmarks post did.

Thanks for the reply. I actually search for Gecko Rouge on the forum earlier today and did find your SAL thread. Awesome.
