Hi,
Got a tricky question here, so any answers gratefully received!

I did not start in the middle of my fabric when I started my cross stitch design, and now I have run out of fabric, but still have some design left to do!! Is there anything on the market that I could use, to add fabric onto my proginal piece so I can complete the design??

How big is your design and how much have you stitched?

I haven't been stitching as long as some members of the forum, but in my limited experience I've not come across or know of anything on the market that you can add to your fabric that would help get it finished. The only thing I would do if it was me would be to undo what I'd stitched and start again - not pleasant but the most obvious solution that I can think of. Doesn't mean I'm right but it's what I would do. Sorry!

Everyone starts stitching in their own way, but for me starting in the centre for some of the smaller designs makes sure my design is centred and there is sufficient fabric on either side (and above and below). I'm just embarking on the bigger designs and it's tricky.

Sorry I am no help as I had to junk a project that I did this on. It was really disappointing as it was suppose to be a birthday gift for my sister and I was 3/4 done with a rather large project. That made me quite angry at the time. I pretty much always start in the middle if I can now.

I've seen this happen and seen it dealt with effectively by tacking a piece of aida to the short side (same width and overlapping by about 10 stitches) and stitching over both pieces to join it on - it would only work if the stitching was solid all the way down though and I understand that the lady that did it had to muck about with tension to ensure there was no visible line from the join.

However when she was done and it was framed you couldn't tell.

I was going to make the same suggestion as Mystonique as I had a similar situation many years ago. You can only do this with Aida fabric (it's very difficult to line up the holes in linen and evenweave) and you have to make sure you line the holes up when you stiitch the two pieces together.. also it leaves a weak spot in your stitching so you have to be careful when stretching the piece for framing. I got over this by making mine up as a bell pull

Good advice Mystonique and Athalie. This hasn't happened to me (as yet!), but its worth knowing it's not the end of the world if it does.

I did just the same thing with a design! Luckily I was able to get the design finished with just 4 aida blocks to spare I was given the advice to graft on some aida and it does seem your only option if you're not going to junk the whole piece.
I was able to turn mine into a wall hanging and kept the backing and edge fabrics Very close to the finished stitching.

Depending on the design of the chart, if possible, you could just start stitching where you left off on another piece of aida (or whatever you're using) and break the design up into segments (not sure how to explain this). Like, if you took a square photo and cut it into 4 smaller squares, you could frame it in 4 seperate frames and hang them "seperately" but in the right sequence so that the image is still visible, but "broken apart." Not sure if that helps. Lol. Good luck with whatever you choose to do!
