Tip from Cross Stitcher

The April issue of Cross Stitcher feature a cake band. In large letters they give their wisdom:
"Don't forget to measure your cake first, to make sure your band fits right."
So bake first, start stitching after. That will make any cake I serve stale and moldy.

Or stitch first- but not cut the length until cake is done?
Don't get any mags.. so haven't seen the pattern.

Mine too
Of course you could always make a (several?) trial cakes to sustain you whilst stitching and to have a ready referral guide for the band.

I've seen some cake band designs in Cross Stitcher magazine before, but I'm wondering, what's the point in them? I've never seen them in use before, but then most cakes here in the states are coated top and sides in frosting, so it would be very messy to put anything around it.
And of course, I couldn't just google this because all it gave me were links to things about the band named Cake... which I happen to love.

But not helpful to my inquiry at all.

Actually geekishly my daughter is a cake decorator and she uses cake bands quite often. Usually with Fondant frosting. They are usually just a single color but some are decorated. They just add a bit of color.

Well, fondant isn't messy and sticky like buttercream frosting would be. almost all the cakes my family makes and eats have that. I suppose with fondant covered cakes, it would make sense, but I still find the idea of a cross-stitched cake band silly.
