Is there a 'rule of thumb'?

Hi all,
I was wondering if there is a 'rule of thumb' as to how much dead space or border area that should be left when cross stitching a chart or creating one from scratch?
I realize that there are a bazillion ways to finish off a pattern with frames and everything else but, is there a 'rule of thumb' as to how much in general?

Thank you,

My thumbs aren't particularly obediant.....

I'll tell you like I tell my 17 y/old son (he's writting a book) This is a whole new Universe & YOU get to decide everything. If it pleases your eye, go for it.

I agree with Diana and say if you are pleased with it then that is enough........however most pieces will have from 2-3 inches space from the stitching to the edge. And I believe that framers prefer 3 inches to work with.
