DMC black vs Anchor black

Hi all
When I was lurking here, I found a thread about DMC 310 and a suggestion I think that it doesn't provide as good coverage as anchor black? I am building my DMC collection and am about to start a piece with. HUGE amount of black in the background and was wondering what your advice is? I am using DMC black in a kit I am using and it does not feel quite as 'glossy' as the other threads (I am sorry, I don't know if there is a correct term for this!)
Advice welcome please before I begin and get frustrated!

I switched to Anchor black when using it in the body of a piece.. from suggestions I picked up on this site.
I think the coverage is better. Hard to describe, but I think Anchor thread is a bit fluffier so it fills a block better.
I only use DMC black now when backstitching.
I can send you a bit of Anchor if you want.. send me a PM and I'll pop a bit into the mail for you to play around with.

Maggie - that is incredibly kind of you, but I am in the UK and I will just go buy a skein and try - I think it will cost me the same as for you in postage! I thought someone had said something about coverage, but if can't find the thread now.
I was showing my daughter (12) some of the WIPs people are posting on here and she read some of the comments and just said - wow - people are so nice on here! She is so right - what I see is a lovely community all willing to help and cheer each other on. So glad I have found you all.

Anchor is cheap if you buy mixed colours But more expensive if you choose colours Dmc is cheaper to choose own colours

Another one to consider is Madeira black, although I find it a little "fuzzier" than DMC and Anchor and personally I don't think it feels as nice as those two, but the coverage is good. I'm in the UK and can send you some Madeira to play with if you like! PM me your address if you want some.

I'm another who uses DMC for most of my projects except for black where I use Anchor. I was not happy with the coverage I was getting with the black. I have one large project which has pages of just black background. Two strands of DMC over 1 on 25 count had decent, if not great coverage but when using other colors (especially lots of confetti) become impossible to stitch. I tried tenting 2 over 1 with the DMC and coverage was not great. Switched to Anchor after reading about it here (can't find the thread) and I think the background coverage is much better. I am using the Anchor black on other projects and can see the difference. Still not the best coverage but much better. Something about the dye or dyeing process must make black floss noticeably thinner. Don't know why.

I personally use DMC Black and I have not noticed a big change from the rest of the colors.

I use DMC black all the time, but when it comes to my HAEDs I will probably use Madeira -- got that tip from a professional in the trade. All has to do with the dye. I'm also going to try the 12wt Sulky petite, which is meant to be the same weight as 2 strands of floss. (An upcoming experiment.)

I'd love to hear what you think of it. Do they do a "wt" (whatever that is) suitable for 1x1 full x on 28ct?

No idea, BL, sorry!

But they do have various weights of sewing threads in all these marvellous colours, so perhaps have a look?

Hi there.
This is one of the threads where DMC and Anchor was discussed. I still use DMC for black, but only because I bought a cone of it!

I use DMC for all my projects. Lately I've found the white to be thin!!! (???)
