Is the back supposed to look like this?

I started a project! My mom loves sunflowers and there was a lovely pattern in one of the cross stitch magazines I bought, and she's moving away soon so I wanted to start making her a pillow. Who the heck knows when I'll finish it. But we'll see.
Anyways, I wanted to give parking a shot and I wanted to make sure that I was on the right track. The back looks... so strange to me. It bugs me.
Am I doing it .. alright?
Front!
Back!
There isn't much there yet, a whole 48 stitches. But I'm still new and this is pretty ambitious. LOL.

It looks about how my work would look. If I need to carry my thread over more than 2 or 3 stitches, I sometimes run the thread under existing stitches, though I sometimes forget.

Very tidy!
When you get enough colour differences in an area it may become difficult to see any fabric with apparently random threads going everywhere on the back.
This is the back of the central section of my first project:

It really hasn't got the same number of colours as yours, so looks a bit better.
My current one, however, has quite a few colours and looks a bit more of a mess:
Regards,
Richard

Your back looks fine. Unless you plan to enter competitions with your stitching, don't fret too much about the back. Mind what curley sue said about about not carrying threads. The only real consideration should be that you don't want a wad of thread on the back that will make a visible 'bump' on the front. Your back looks just as we'd expect it to.

Looks just fine! Don't worry: enjoy the stitching of sunflowers in this glorious weather!

What a wonderful idea for your Mum! She is very lucky.
The back of your stitching looks fine to me. You are not trailing thread through unstitched area. Keep going!

I agree and as has been said before: There is a reason it is called a "back" and unless anyone else will see it, how it looks is between you and the cross stitch fairy and I don't think she cares.

I'm not at home, so I can't snap a picture of the back of my HAED, but here's one I took a while ago of the front that has part of the back visible wrapped around the rods of my frame.
That pattern's got pretty heavy confetti, and the back is covered as fully as the front. I wouldn't worry about it if I were you.
