Hi all stitchers

Hi all, I am so glad that I found this forum: I am a solitary stitcher since none of my friends know how to sew, and if I recall, sewing is traditionally a communal activity. Well then, online stitch mates are better than none!

I used to stitch in my younger days, so a return to stitching is like taking a step backward into a small sliver of the past.

I am thinking of subscribing to CrossStitcher and would like to hear your personal thoughts on this magazine. In particular, I was wondering if the patterns in this magazine are 'big', in that no magnifying glass is needed to decipher it.

Hi Miriam, welcome to the forum -- I'm glad you found us!

You want communal? Boy will you get communal :-). Here we encourage, offer shoulders, let off steam, share whatever we feel is worth sharing (which is most things), oh, and we stitch too :-).

Jump right in and join the fun; why not start a thread in the SAL section to show off whatever you are working on at the moment?

Can't help you about Cross Stitcher magazine, I'm afraid -- I've read loads but I tend to get them second-hand off eBay and they are up to 13 or 14 years old, so my information would not be very up to date! But there's bound to be someone around here who can help.

Welcome Miriam,

As Mabel has said you have joined the right place we love to chat and share EVERYTHING. We get to know each other very well and that makes it fun to share, laugh and cry about what we all have going on. Jump in and enjoy your time here with us.

I am sorry to say that I do not have the knowledge you are looking for on these mags. I get most of mine second hand and that means 80-90 time frame. I have so many now I don't have time to look at them all as I would like to. I know that we do have ladies here that can give good information so sit back and wait you should be getting replys soon.

Hi and welcome from Somerset. This a great palce to be everyone is so friendly and helpful.

Cross Stitcher hmm personally I don't like it since it changed its design recently but the charts are ok. I would suggest buy a few for a couple of months you will soon decide on your favourite mag.

Welcome! I don't know if I could subscribe to a cross stitch magazine. All those new patterns coming out every month would just get overwhelming 'cause I'd want to do them all. I always browse through them at the bookstore and just pick up which ones I like at the time.

Hello and welcome. Pullup a comfy arm chair and have a nosey. We're very communal and chitter chatter about anything and everything. You'll soon make a load of new friends and settle in.

As for cross stitcher... I'm not subscribed but I do buy regularly (Speaking of... my local newsagent has eventually started stocking it for me now YAY I may make a thread about that later). It was the first stitching magazine I started collecting and I wanted to subscribe but never did because they never offered a free gift I actually wanted. But then I had a nosey in my newsagent and I would say the world of cross stitching is much better than cross stitcher. Of course my favorite is cross stitch crazy, but that's very childish in it's designs.

Yes you can read the patterns easily and without a magnifying glass...or at least I can, but I would strongly recommend buying one before subscribing. There are at least ten stitchy mags out there so you should give them a go before subscribing.

Hi and welcome, miriam! Glad that you found us!

I personally like Cross Stitcher (because of the Margaret Sherry designs)...You could try buying single issues first before subscribing so you could really decide if the designs are of your taste or not...each xstitch mag caters to different tastes in designs.

Take care and happy stitching!

Hi Miriam,
I’ve recently come back to cross stitching after many years and just joined this forum. I got Tesco to deliver this month’s copy of Cross Stitcher and The world of Cross stitching, just to see what the magazines were like these days. Have to say they seem very similar to me. As others suggest I’d pick up a copy before deciding to subscribe. As for the charts no way could I read the chart from a distance for sewing!! But then I find that with all charts! :( I always scan my charts into my computer and then print them out twice as big. Have to say the lion cub is quite cute in this month's Cross stitcher.

May I suggest that you look at Mary Hickmott's New Stitches too! Available in WH Smiths. There is a web site too.

Hello and welcome from me too.
I love the lion cub in this months crossstitcher mag.
I reckon you should just browse the mags as they come out rather than subscribe and buy the ones that have patterns or articles that interest you.
