I have just brought my first sampler I have 12 months to complete it. Its for my niece's wedding in July. Just wondered what the term "once you have completed all the cross stitches add the backstitch". I know what cross stitch is obviously but not sure what backstitch means. Any help for a newcomer much appreciated.

Hi Prudence and welcome to the forum from South Carolina! How exciting to be stitching your first piece! The first piece I ever stitched was a sampler for my nephew (who is now 25) though I had dabbled with embroidery and crewel before then. Back stitching is outlining sections of your piece which generally is used to bring out the details in the design. Usually the directions on the chart will give you some instructions on what a stitch should look like, but not always. The
Scarlet Quince website is one of the best for providing clear instructions on the "how to" of basic and more advanced techniques. This is one to bookmark. There are quite a few other good ones, but it can be overwhelming at first so I won't throw them at you.
Your instructions are basically saying to complete all the cross stitches in your sampler before finishing with the backstitching. Many suggest that and its a good way to begin. As you get more experience you will find that this is a craft that lets you do what works best for you. No rules other than enjoy yourself and enjoy stitching. I hope you will stay with us and post pictures of your progress. We love pictures and we love to help encourage each other. Don't be afraid to ask any question and there is no such thing as too many questions, either. Someone here usually knows the answer or knows where to go to find it.
