Anytime that I can I will use the loop method to start my stitching but that can only be used with even numbers of threads. For ending I will run the needle under 3 to 5 stitches and then skipping the last stitchI run the need back under the previous stitches as an added anchor.

When I'm using two strands, I use the loop method to start; with one strand of floss, I start with an away knot, or I just hold the tail on the back until it is anchored under the stitches. I end by running the needle under the stitches on the back. If there aren't enough stitches to run the needle under, I'll just bring the needle and floss up an inch or so away in a direction that I know will eventually have stitches, making sure to cover that tail when I get there.

when parking I use away knots to start and finish. when cross country stitching I use a loop start and end by running under stitches. I'll use away knots if there is not enough stitches to run it under.
