High Praise

A few years ago I made a stocking for my nephew’s baby. It wasn’t finished in time for the shower, so I gave them a set of books and three pictures. A pile of thread and Aida, the half completed stocking, and a picture of what the stocking would look like.

Nephew thanked us for the books...but his sister got all excited....no no, the books are not the present. It’s the stocking. So, I decided then, her future children would definitely get stockings.

Currently I am working on three. One for my grandson, one for my daughter-in-law’s niece, and the third is the one I got from squirrel. It’s a very detailed picture, so I only work on it for a bit of time, then put it away. I decided since it is so special it will be for this niece’s baby. She is not pregnant.

Yesterday was her wedding shower. Somehow, the conversation of babies came up (something important to both of them) and I said that I had already started a stocking. She got so excited and said “you’re making a stocking for (fiancé)?” Then says to him, “oh, you will love it. She makes the most beautiful stockings” and he looks very under whelmed. “Um...ok...stockings”. She says “no, you don’t understand. They are cross stitched” and he says “um...ok....stockings”. My niece takes off, and her fiancé who I have just met is looking at me very awkwardly. So I take out my phone to show him a few of the stockings I’ve made.

His eyes popped out and he says “you MADE these”? Turns to someone else and says “I really picked the right family to marry in to. @rotfl:

So, apparently I have another stocking to make.

My niece was maybe a little embarrassed when she realized I meant I was making the stocking for a future baby...but mostly she was excited he is getting a stocking by their first wedding as husband and wife.

:D Your fame is spreading and rightly so. I am sure it will be a lovely one for the young man to cherish too. :)

I may have picked out a pattern for his stocking.

They met in bible college, so they are Christian and their beliefs are very important to them. I have a few religious themed patterns. One is a Nativity scene. I need to talk to niece though. Some Christians consider things like that as “false idols”. Also, there are 2 cherubs above the manger. Some Christians do not believe in angels. (Which seems odd to me, since they believe an angel spoke to the shepherds.

Anyway, I want something he will love, but hoping to surprise him.

Roland, different denominations hold different things as important so I don't pretend to speak for anyone but myself, but I think for some Christians the trouble with cherubs is that they aren't actually angels as described in the Bible. Angels in the Bible either look like people (only sometimes luminous), or they are described as having as many as six wings and more than one face, but on the whole they seem to be pretty impressive creatures - NOT chubby babies with little wings that wouldn't keep a moth in the air. Those seem to be based more on some interpretations of Cupid and other non-biblical ideas. So perhaps that helps explain it?
But simply asking them is a very sensible idea, and by far the easiest way of finding out what they hold to be important!

I have spoken to Christians who deny the existence of angels at all. Which I find odd, but not something I would argue with them about. My in-laws, who were ordained Christian ministers would not allow Nativity scenes, or even crosses in their home or church.

The theme of angels is very complicated. If nothing else, in different languages they belong to different genders. In Ukrainian, for one, the word is of male gender. When my English friend was stitching an angel, it was dressed as a woman and she spoke about it as "she". This said, good old Ukrainian and European artists usually painted angels as babies or little kids.

As for the stockings, the fact that people are seriously religious does not mean they can be given only a religious themed stocking. Some nice cheerful winter scene could be perhaps even a better option. Just a thought, you are free to ignore it.

I’m not a definite on a religious themed stocking.

I do like this one and it's very different from my usual. Usually my stockings are bright, bold colours. This pattern they are more pastel.
