newbie Questions

Post by laura118 »

Hi, i have been cross stitching on and off for a few years but have never really done any big projects.
I have decided to do a christmas design for a family member as a christmas prezzie.
But i am not sure if i have brought the right size aida.
On the piece i want to do it says the finished design is 11''x10'' on 28HPI linen over 2 threads, It also says you can use 14HPI aida. so i went ahead and ordered the 14 ct aida 14'' x 18'', was the best size i could find. Then when i looked again it said i needed 17'' x 16''.

Will the piece i have brought be big enough or have a made a big mistake already??

If the finished design is 11'' x 10'' in 28 count linen (that is the same as if you stitch on 14 count aida), I think it's enough with your 14'' x 18''.

17'' x 16'' can be if you want more white border...

As Summernight says the size should be alright as 28 count over two is the same as 14 count aida.

To settle your mind more look at the pattern again and see what the stitch count says, divide by 14 and you have the exact size that the picture will come out. If they have not given a stitch count do a quick count on the pattern.

If you are struggling with the way I have put it feel free to put a post on with what the pattern says and I will happily work it out for you.

I think your piece of fabric will be fine.

My rule of thumb is to leave 3 inches all around the design, so for a finished design of 10"x11" you would need at least 13"x14" piece of fabric. Add more if you want to give yourself maximum flexibility for framing, of course.

You should be fine. In fact, you should have more extra fabric around the stitching to frame than most kits will give you. Can't wait to see what you're working on!
