...yes another project started... almost!?!
(So far I've only just started to stitch a basic grid on to some 18ct black Aida)

I was clicking thru Ebay the other day and I won a Jimi Hendrix chart, so I used the opportunity as an excuse to buy more stash - extra skeins of what seems like every shade of grey that DMC supply.

I initally thought that a black & white image might be easier than full colour... but it turns out this chart is 175 x 196 stitches and has 22 shades of grey involved.

Anyway, here's the pic used for the basis of the chart.

I'm interested to see how you get on with this, with it being all 'shades of' and no changes of colours. Such a fantastic picture at the end though, I can only imagine it's going to be SO worth it, even if it is a little hard to stitch all those greys!

Thankfully the chart seems to be really clear and relatively easy to follow....

(at least it should be, eventually.... after I've finished stitching the grid on to the cloth )

That's an interesting project. Are you gridding along with stitching the Barrowman? Or have you stopped to race the Barrowman along?

I've been gridding the Hendrix project, mainly because I already had the Aida and some threads at work with me...
The Barrowman project is at home - and I'm hoping to get some progress done on my day off tomorrow

Mr Hendrix is on the radio as I type this now, how about that for spooky

It's just a thought, but why not use a different colour for the background (purple haze?) which could break up the colour a bit..?
I think Hendrix was a God, and this is a great stitchery project to do.

Great idea about the purple background. I'll seriously consider putting some sort of purple highlights in to the design

What a fantastic design! What colour aida are you stitching on and are you having to stitch that black bit of background???

It's on 18ct black Aida. I've started a tiny part of it this afternoon, maybe 50 or 60 stitches so far... and as long as I'm working in bright conditions it's not too bad

Good luck working on the black!! I know first hand what a pain in the butt it can be sometimes

Just a mini progress pic - You'll see that the stitched area is mostly just the highlighted area of his hair, and although it doesn't look like much progress for two or three afternoons work, there's probably about 300-400+ stitches in 4 or 5 colours already

(There's also a small area of anthracite grey to the bottom left of the white area, which hasn't really shown up too well on the pic)


Also I'd like to point out that although I haven't been stitching long enough to really know if different brand names or suppliers make a big difference to material quality, but I have to say that the Charles Craft Aida I'm using for this project looks and feels MUCH better quality than I've used in the past.

This will be really effective on black aida - I can't wait to see the next update. Looks like you made good progress already! I can definitely agree with you on the Charles Craft Aida - I'm using a pale blue piece of it for my Japanese Koi and it's lovely to work with.

You've made great progress and I wish I could stitch has fast has everyone on here as it seems to be taking me forever to do my projects which are needed for christmas

I did a black and white portrait on black aida before. I swore I would never do it again.

@threadbear, yes I'm enjoying it, although I'm still avoiding stitching the darkest areas (described on the chart as "ebony" and "anthracite" and "pepper grey") because they're so difficult to distinguish against the black aida. The image is starting to develop though, so I'm getting a gradual reward for my efforts.
EDIT : there's also LOTS and LOTS and LOTS of confetti stitches in very similar colours that are also starting to get quite frustrating... so I'm only hoping the end result will be worth the extra effort

@ kymbaker, I don't really regard myself as any faster than average, I just try to arrange my time so that I can put the hours in to my work. As mentioned elsewhere on this forum, it really is the enjoyment of seeing a project develop rather than the speed of the stitching that matters.

@ Spark, I can appreciate the frustration with stitching dark colours on to a black background. I really need the brightest of conditions just to be able to progress with the lighter colours - so I'm really not looking forward to the darker shades.


@ everyone, I've made a noticeable amount of progress since this last pic, but I don't have my camera with me at the moment, so I'm afraid that all interested forum members will have to wait until Sunday for a piccy update
