Finally a project I've settled on - Northern Lights

I've been away for quite a few weeks, although I have managed to pop in at times. I've had some changes at home which have dictated that I don't spend as much time on the PC as I used to do (for all the right reasons though!!)
Anyway, after much upping and downing and to-ing and fro-ing with various projects, I've finally found one I'm really loving. It's a picture I've converted to a pattern of the Northern Lights. The picture is
here. There are 101 colours in total

but I have to say I'm really, really loving it

. I'm stitching it on 14 count black Aida and the finished size will be 50cm x 36cm. I started this last Thursday and here's my progress so far:
The colours are much more vibrant than the picture shows so on the next update, I will try and get on in natural daylight!!
Since last night I have filled in a little bit of turquoisey/blue between the purple and grey and am now filling in some little bits before I start on the green

Oh that's just stunning! *sits down in awe*
I can see why you have opted for black fabric - imagine stitching all that black foreground!!
What a beautiful choice you have made.

Thanks for your lovely comments
I'm happy to finally find something I can sit down and get my teeth into. I've probably started half a dozen projects since January but nothing's really "grabbed" me until this so fingers crossed it keeps me entertained for the duration
I can't really get out of doing it because my OH is keeping me on track !!

Not surprised this has grabbed you -- it's a gorgeous picture and it must be so satisfying to see it take shape on your fabric!

I love pictures like this. I used to see the northern lights when we still lived in Montana they are so gorgeous. Will watch this one with wonder.

This is beautiful! I love the Northern Lights, I've always been fascinated by them and would love to see them (I think maybe the Shetland Isles is the nearest they can be seen from here...?)
Also was going to ask like Slinky, I guess you're leaving the black bits empty?
Those colours do look great on the black background!

There's several astronomy pictures I've bookmarked that I'd like to turn into a project. Somehow I missed this one. This will look fantastic.

Seeing the Northern Lights is one of the things on my list of "Things to do before I die". Actually at the moment it's the only thing - as the other was to fly on Concorde and I never did get a chance at that

Someday I hope to go on a trip to Greenland where I think you get a really good chance of seeing them well.
