Attacked by a cockroach!

Post by Sarah Gixxer »

Ewww. I'm at work and just had to go down the yard to look for a colleague - I didn't go near any buildings or trees or anything, but when I came back in, I found this cockroach sitting on my sleeve!! It was only a little one, about an inch long. I flicked it off and it landed on my desk and one of my female colleagues started screaming blue murder, hahaha. This cockroach was on the desk stuck on its back, legs wriggling. Anyway, I poked it onto a piece of paper and took it outside, but it makes me wonder if we're going to get a plague of them. It must have been flying and landed on me as I wasn't near anything it could have been on and then dropped on me.

Yuk! I hope I don't get covered in them when I cycle home!!!!

Brrrrrrrrr *shivers*

I grew up in a block of flats and right above us lived a lady from Surinam who got her rice sent in big sacks from home, and some of them were later discovered to have cockroaches in them and we had a plague of them. They were EVERYWHERE! You'd open a drawer to grab a fork and you'd grab a cockroach; you'd get into bed and feel one (or more..) wriggling against your toes; you'd take a new shirt out of the wardrobe and have to shake it to get them out. UGH, it was horrible!

In the end they had to fumigate (or whatever it is they do) about three or four floors, several times.

I don't much like cockroaches...

  Thanks for that little story, Mabel !!!

I didn't actually realise they could fly, Sarah!! I hope this isn't going to become a feature of this hot weather! Wood lice I can deal with but not anything much bigger!

Ugh, Mabel, what a horrible story!!!

Louise, I wasn't sure if they could fly or not actually, they only seem to have little wings in comparison to the size of the body, but it appeared on my sleeve from nowhere so I just assumed it had flown and landed on me. Unless of course it was lurking on the roof of the building and jumped down at the exact second I walked in the door like a little dive bomber, hahahaha.

One of my colleagues has since been telling everyone I had a cockroach land on me that was as big as a mouse! Think the fright must have made her eyes magnify it.

Yuk.

I'm working on a social housing programme in East London at the moment, and two of our properties are 'on hold' until a cockroach infestation is sorted out.

I don't go near those properties.... :?

Pet cockroaches??? Yuk! No thank you! I have been known to keep a variety of strange pets in the past, but not creepy crawlie ones - mainly rats and mice, which I used to breed. I used to have a huge black and white rat called Pepper who would go to town with me on Saturdays and sit on my shoulder in the pub, nibbling crisps.

i'm not scared of roaches..it's these:

http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_ucHWzEgtvVU/S ... ricket.jpg" target="_blank

mutant spider chickets.
why? they don't chirp to let u know they are there in a dark room.
when you walk in a turn the light on..they don't scurry away along the floor under a bed or something. Oh no..these buggers are on the wall..mid way up, all the way up..wherever..but not along the floor.
and what do they do? Jump AT YOU!!!!!!!!

*shivers*

it's really nice when u r in the bathtub taking a shower and you see one on the ceiling mid way through and ur stuck, staring at it, praying it doesn't jump on you *barf*

Oh, poor Sarah!

Mabel, I know exactly what you are talking about, when I spent a term in Moscow, the students' hostel was full of them. You can get used to them, but it was still terrible. *brrr*

When I was in the States, my boyfriend lived in private campus accommodation infestated with bugs. He should have realised when he saw the can of RAID on the top of the fridge. totally yukky!! I really, really hate cockroaches. They are shown no mercy, not that I have ever seen one around here... mice, rats, plagues of flies (currently) .... not cockroaches.

In the 12 years I have lived in Colorado, I have never (thank goodness) seen a cockroach...however, the last time I visited my dad in california, I was making something in the kitchen and turned around and saw one run across the floor and under the fridge. I pretty much immediately ran right to the other room to go put my shoes on and I do believe I didn't take them off until I left!

The only thing we have really bad here is moths. The darn things are everywhere! My little kitties have a field day with them so luckily there aren't many in the house but I remember one year it was so bad that I had to get the vacuum cleaner out and vacuum the little suckers right out of the air.
