material for afghan

Post by mel876 »

Hi everyone,
I just found out one of my best friends is pregnant and I was thinking of starting an afghan for the baby, probably using Maragret Sherry's alphabet.

I'm just wondering what material you would suggest?

thanks

Depending on the size of afghan you want, you can buy either ready made and edged ones or just the fabric that you have to finish yourself. There are lots of sites that sell both so thats what you have to decide first. Hope this helps?

I am using a type of fabric called Anne Cloth for my afghan. The one I'm doing has 7 x 4 squares, which is half size - you can also get 7 x 8 depending on the size you want. Each square measures 5 x 5 inches.

However, I'm not sure I'd recommend Anne Cloth really - the fibres in it are quite hairy and catch on the thread and the needle and it feels a little bit rough to the touch. It will be nice as a cover for a baby's bed or cot or to tuck in a pram or something, but a little bit rough to actually wrap a baby in.

There are a lot of other types of fabric suitable for afghans but I don't have experience of any others. Sorry I can't be of any more help.
