FELT APPLIQUE XMAS STOCKING WALL HANGING

Post by pinkywinky »

Hi everyone,

I'm hoping someone can give me a bit of help and advice. I've been looking at these 3D felt applique christmas stocking kits. Never having attempted felt applique before, I was wondering if anyone had done anything like this and could answer my questions? Bit daft though they may be:

Are all the bits sewn?
By hand or machine?
Are all the figures "stuffed"?
How fiddly are they to do?
How do all the little bits get attached?
Do they take ages to do?
Should I just stick to cross stitching a stocking?

Maybe I should be worrying about "greater" things like global warming and the state of the economy - but hey - this is what keeps me wondering. I am going to a Christmas Crafts fair in Glasgow on Friday and am thinking of trying one of these, so any advice would be great. I'm a bit worried mine would look all deformed and "in meltdown"!! :? :?

I have done a stocking and am mid-way through a Bucilla tree skirt.
It is very simple to do and the instructions are clear. Most of the time-consuming stuff is sewing on beads and sequins but it is a really enjoyable change from cross stitch.
On my tree skirt, the trees and Father Christmas are made 3D by stuffing with toy stuffing. That is pretty easy too once you get the hang of it.
The felt stockings will definately be stitched up quicker than a cross stitch one.
Here are some pics that show my progress.

I think you can see that the placement of the pieces is marked and they are all numbered too so you can't get it wrong.
Hope I've been some help.

Should have said, it's all hand done, no machine needed.

Thanks Midge. Your tree skirt looks fantastic. :applesauce: One more question - Do you stitch really close to the edge of the felt pieces? Yours looks so neat and tidy - can't see any stitches at all. I quite fancy a bit of "fancy" work with beads and sequins. :thinks: May be spending more than I thought on Friday!!

The pieces are stiched over the edge of the piece and into the base material. The stitches sort of disappear into the felt and can't be seen at all.
Did you buy anything?

Yes I went ahead and bought a Christmas stocking hanging decoration - complete with fairy lights!!! I have opened it up and it looks a bit daunting - but I want to start it once I get my Santa Stocking finished. That should be quite soon if I can keep up with my progress so far. I must say some of the bits in the felt kit look a bit teeny and fiddly. I'll confess I'm a bit nervous about starting it and making a hash of it?!?!?

You will be fine. The instructions are very clear and even the fiddly little bits are not too bad to stitch up.
If you need any help, I'm usually around.

Now that I have finished my Santa Stocking I've started on this wall hanging. I'm actually really enjoying it. I'll try to post a photo with progress but at the moment I'm having trouble with photobucket. Every time I try to edit a pic Internet Explorer crashes! Technology eh - who would have it???

I was glad to read this thread as I've also bought a felt Christmas stocking to try to put together for my daughter...

My mum saw the package (as it was delivered to her) and said I might want to wait until she's older before letting her at it as it has a lot of little pieces. But I still want to put it together when I'm home for Christmas :)
