What is the Difference To You WIPs and UFOs

Post by wasabi »

I was thinking about this yesterday when I was taking some photos of two of my projects and I don't quite understand the difference between UFOs and WIPs.

To me if something is unfinished then it's a work in progress, I have one cross stitch I've been doing on and off for a couple of years so even that I consider to be a work in progress because I will finish it one day.

So I just wanted to know what you guys consider a UFO and what you consider a WIP to maybe help me get a better grasp on the concept.
Please take a look at my cross stitch blog All my cross stitch related random rants, finished and unfinished projects, kits or charts I'm looking at getting and more:

My UFO is one I have had for too many years to admit too  and I put it away a while ago unfinished..it may yet be upgraded to a WIP and stand a chance of being completed,at least as a WIP I would be actually stitching it :D

The deciding factor is 'length of time' either untouched or only intermittently stitched. My longest UFO is +25 years. ( oh dear )

WIP is anything I am (at least intermittently) working on -- UFO is something I once started but which has for whatever reason been put to one side. It's a difficult one, though, because I think of my Silk Alphabet as a WIP even though I sometimes don't stitch it for months on end, but that's because it was always intended as a long-term project (think years or even decades). BoInk is definitely in danger of sliding from WIP to UFO...

I class a UFO as anything I haven't touched for at least 4 months. Fortunately as a 1 cross stitch project at a time girl, I don't have any UFO cross stitches. I do have a UFO needlepoint though. Not quite sure I'll ever finish it as the detail just doesn't match up to cross stitch. Also I may yet break my 1 project at a time rule as I'm not sure I want to be stitching christmas decorations in March :)

UFOs are ones I've just given up on. They're sat somewhere half finished and without any real desire left to finish them. WIPs are what I'm actually working on and progressing with.

To me, too, it is the length of time untouched that can change the status. I have one more that rarely gets mentioned. It is the garbage classification-WFG-waiting for garbage designation. My current WIP has jumped from WIP to UFO to WFG several times in it's lifetime. Only because I discovered this forum and wonderful hints in turn did it actually escape the garbage bin and I am now enjoying working on it.

I'm in agreement with what everyone else says about their UFO's.
I only have one at the moment, but it glares out accusingly at me whenever I pick up my WIP. Maybe one day I'll cave and finish it off. :shifty:

I started a few projects before I got married and for one reason or another lost interest......It's unfortunate to put so much effort into something and then lose the passion to finish it. I think UFO's are projects you need a little :poke: to get them finished. So it's not really a time issue for me, but rather a desire to work on the project.

As everyone has said it is the time that is dedicated to actually finishing the project and that does not mean just the time it is taking but the attitude you have toward the project.

I considered my 3 HAED's WIP's but I also considered Chessie and Catch a Falling Star UFO's also. Chessie was started at the beginning of this year and then I set it down for 8 months, worked on it for about 3 weeks and it's been sitting again for 2 months..Catch a falling star was started in May, worked on for 2 months and has been sitting ever since. Wrath, on the other hand, was started in September and I have yet to put it down.

Current WIP:
HAED Chessie-10,200 of 90,300 - 11%
HAED Catch a Falling Star-8,900 of 203,900 - 4%
HAED Wrath-46,630 of 240,000 - 19%
