I just got my first silk threads in the mail today I got 7 shades of the Thread Gatherer Silk 'N Colors (#8 was back-ordered so it should come next week). I am so excited to try them!! My question is how do you normally store silks? Do you untwist them and wind them onto bobbins or do you just leave them on their little cards?

Definitely a Mabel question...but she is very busy and may not be on for a few days so I will try to help. I think when we have talked about this in the past Mabel said she puts all of her threads and that includes silk on to bobbins.

I have only ever had 3 different silks and I used most of them up right away, so did not have to do anything with them. I don't really get on very well with silks and the price of them compared to DMC is just silly. BUT if I did buy more I think I would put them on to bobbins as then they would fit into the box I have that holds my floss.

I wound mine onto bobbins, apart form the Madeira silks which are in those handy packs that make the floss come out easily and tangle-free.

Oh, I wanted to ask the same question about Madeira silks - I got a few for Christmas from my BF. They come in those handy little packages, true, but when I cut a length, and only use half of it, what do I do with the rest? I cannot tuck it back into the packet...
So maybe it will bobbins in the end, unless someone has a better idea.

I keep a bookmark-sized piece of card with holes punched in it (or more than one if required) for each project I do. When I've cut a length of floss, I take out the strands I need and loop the remainder through a hole in the edge of the card, then mark the colour number next to it. If I have lengths left at the end of a project, they go into my stash of cards that have lengths attached. I'm actually due to sort them all out so they're in numerical order so I can find lengths more easily when I'm starting new projects, so that I can use the lengths already cut first.

Sylvia got me to wind them onto bobbins (she was using only Anchor) and I noted the number in pencil at the top and bottom. She made sure that I didn't wind them on too tightly.

At some stage she bought a plastic box thread organiser and they were kept in numerical order, so I have carried on in the same way.

Welcome to the Silk Club ! Sorry I'm a bit late, but yes I keep them all on bobbins. All of them (and I have a LOT of different types ) work fine -- even the very fine Pipers silk floss, although it's a so-and-so to wind. Why do I wind the Madeira? Because I can keep all my bobbins in bobbin boxes, but the Madeiar packs I'd have to store somewhere else, and like Agi I wouldn't know what to do with any leftovers.
