Silk Help! Mabel...?

Post by AnimaValida »

I am wanting to try a small Chatelaine... I haven't been stitching much at all this last year and I really want to get the bug back! But the Chat supplies are very cost prohibitive... I think I can sub most for DMC, but from what I can tell, the variagated Caron Waterlilies Silk can't be replaced. So... I only need a part of a skein from three colors (Mediterranean, Pomegranate & Spearmint). I was hoping somebody would have a part of one that would be willing to sell! Just putting some feelers out!

On a personal note, I've been rather absent for quite some time. I hope you all are well! I've missed it here!

Welcome back, and I hope the chatelaine willl turn out well!

I'm afraid I can't help with the Waterlilies silk -- as you said, they are terribly pricy and so I have just the one, and it's not one of those you need. If you can find a good picture of the shade, you may be able to substitute one of DMC or Anchor's variegated or multi-colour stranded cottons?

Or if you want to use silk, you could try using Dinky Dyes, which is a similar silk and also comes in many variegated colours. Stitching Bits & Bobs have another sale on at the moment, and DD silks are $3.20.
Or splash out on the real thing -- they have Waterlilies on sale at $4.80 *tempt tempt*

Thanks for the info Mabel! If I end up purchasing at this sale of yours, I'll have to send you some (esp since I wont need it all and you were very generous in sending me silk samples ages ago). Is $4.80 a good price?

Mabel, didn't you write out a "cheat sheet" about all the different kinds of silks you've used? I could have sworn I saw it before but didnt really read it since I never used silks before. Can you tell me how to find it (if it exists)?

No need to send me anything -- just keep it for future projects :-)! $4.80 is one of the better prices I've found -- here in the UK the cheapest I've found is £4.75, so nearly dollars for pounds, and they can be as much as £5.75!

Ah, the cheat sheet :-) -- I recently updated it (though some prices have since changed again), the latest version can be downloaded here.

Unless you mean the decription of different types of silk, like Soft or Flat, that I think is in the Glossary

Faith - Thank you! You're my first comment on it! I've always thought it's quite cool as far as avatars go...

Mabel - Thanks so much! I've printed it out and guess what! I understand a LOT more of it than when I just glanced at it before.

I'm exited about the Chat, but it's a lot of firsts for me... 32 ct over 2, silks, beading (yikes!). I'm gonna have to do a SAL just so you all can enjoy my trying to figure it all out.
