Label is 3813 because 504 has been discontinued... although I 'd write 504 on it to so you know it's the substitute ;)

In fact like nearly all the DMC substitutes they are not an exact match -- I have both in my stash and there is a difference; but then there is a very distinct difference between some ancient skeins of 208 and 209 I've got, and the ones you buy now! (Ditto 554)

What I do is cut teh numbers out of the paper keeper and tape it to the bobbin so then I know what I have. This way both numbers are there. So when you have an older chart that calls for 504 you will know that you have to use 3813 beause they have discontinued that number. It is a bit confusing when you have much older charts.

I'm guessing this is because some dyes are banned in the EU?

Yes and no we in the states have had a few discontinued also but the list are different from the UK and the States . We can still get some of the ones that are changed in the European markets.

I'm guessing the old 'elf and safety' thing. So many things are bad for the environment or for humans........

3813is the new number for 504, I use both numberw when i ut on bobbins so that if an old chart states 504 I know what i'm looking for, alternatively you could put a plain bobbin in where 504 would sit and cross reference it to 3813

Is there a chart anywhere that explains what numbers have replaced what numbers because I have both and wondered about it. Generally I assume that it is just a slight change in shade that I can't see myself when I find two threads that are almost identical in color. Didn't think about why one would be discontinuted or banned.

This is a list of the current replacements - http://www.cross-stitch-centre.co.uk/ac ... lours.html" target="_blank

DMC also do a downloadable colour chart and full list of numbers available on their site - http://www.dmc.com/majic/pageServer/0p0 ... l-117.html" target="_blank

thank you. I have a color chart but didn't see anything for the replacing. That is now bookmarked for future reference. Now I will just have to remember that I bookmarked it when I need it.

I recently ran across one that had 2 numbers on it, what I did was I put both numbers on one bobbin with the new number more prominent (so it's seen first) and the old number under it, then in the place where the old number would be I put an empty bobbin and wrote the old number on it then I wrote the new number on it so I would know where to look for it.
