Mrs MBK's Simple Sewing Struggles!

Post by Mrs Milkybar Kid »

I don't usually post in here and stick firmly to my cross stitch comfort zone! For the sake of other sewing newbies out there (turn away now all you professionals!) I thought I would post the little project I made this morning. Now before you see the pic just remember that while some of you come from the "if at first you don't succeed, try try again" school of thought - I come from the "if at first you don't succeed, destroy any evidence you ever tried" think tank @rotfl: ! Here are some quilted coasters that I made up for my sister to go along with some Yankee Candles stuff (another obsession of mine!) as part of a housewarming present:

I find most things look better with a bit of ribbon:

They were quite easy to do and the tutorial I used can be found here. Thought I would be brave and show them as I know some of you are doing hampers etc for the "Primary Gifting Period" and I thought these would be an easy addition to any hamper!

:applesauce: They are lovely and we get to see your pretty new fabrics too. If you didn't say you were a beginner, no one would know.
I think I'm a member of your think tank @rotfl: though sometimes those are the things at the bottom of the cedar chest covered by tons of linens.

They are lovely; presumably the idea could be adapted to make table mats?

Yup - or even mug rugs which is what I plan on doing next once I get to grips with bias binding!

They're fantastic and I'd never have said you're a beginner either from these. There is a reason I tend to stick to counted thread embroidery - my plain sewing is simply appalling  and after falling out with my mother's sewing machine we've agreed to disagree

They're really great, Amanda, and your tutorial link has solved my problem on how sew up small padded cross stitch Christmas decorations.

You've also helped me justify buying my first sewing machine :D (something I've wanted since I was a teenager and which was just 'not on' for boys in the 60s). I couldn't justify buying one just to use it to sew the edges of my aida and canvas.

I've been trying to buy pot holders to replace my worn out ones for months and haven't been able to find any, just those joined glove-type ones. Now I see I can make my own (assuming this absolute beginner can get a sewing machine to sew! ).
