Anyone recognize this sampler?

Post by seedreemer »

I've looked and looked and cannot find it. I'd like to stitch it. I'm sorry it's so small. I can't find a larger pic. Anyone recognize it?

No, sorry, I don't recognise it though the style is quite characteristic of traditional samplers so it might be one of those companies who specialise in that style. I like the squirrel on the right!

Thanks, Mabel. I like the squirrel too. :) I've been checking companies that do this type of thing but nothing so far. It looks like a modern pattern done in an antique style to me, but I could be wrong and it's an authentic reproduction.

I don't recognize it exactly, but it looks familiar. I think I have seen similar designs. Have you tried googling the image? That might help you either find the exact design or give you a good idea of where it might be. Good luck and I hope that you will post pictures of your progress when (not if) you start working on it!

I tried Googling the picture, but it's so small, the result turned up a wall of images -- every traditional-looking sampler on that color cloth. I looked through several pages until I gave up.

I'm not advocating that you "copy" it, but it wouldn't be hard to create a sampler using elements in the same traditional style if you can identify what it is in that sampler that "speaks" to you.

Googling the image was a brilliant idea. Unfortunately I too found nothing except the same pic. It's by someone who takes pics of old homes and posts on Flickr. As far as I can tell it was taken in an historic home in Illinois, which doesn't help me. Here is the whole image. Does anyone recognize any of the other pieces? I'm going to try to find that primitive santa on the left. I'm hoping they might be by the same designer. I've done that little house in the bottom left, which I find amusing.

I did think of charting something pretty close. I'm going to try to find the pattern first though. I've been contemplating what it is that I love about it so much.

:thinks: :thinks: :thinks: The Merry Christmas one with five figures on it looks remarkably familiar - I'll try a bit of digging later.

Mabel, I thought so too, but I couldn't find that one. The big primitive santa is a Prairie Schooler, but the sampler isn't. I can't find the Elinor York piece on the bottom either. You'd think that'd be easy with such a unique name. But I'm forging onward!

The upside...or downside?....is I've added several pieces to my already gigantic wish list. :D

Now this is interesting - I found the Five Santas, but not in cross stitch! It seems to be an applique or something. You can see it here.

I know I've seen the 5 santas in cross stitch---a couple of times on facebook in the stash unload page---I'll try and see if I can locate that one too---I just located the 5 santas in cross stitch---it's a leisure arts booklet and the name of the booklet is Christmas gentlemen but that doesn't look like it's really related to the sampler one---now I really am curious

The sampler we're looking for seems to have a stylised shepherd and shepherdess in the middle, then animals on either side some of which seem to be various types of goat or sheep. I tried googling combinations of those things with "cross stitch" and "sampler" but so far no luck :-(

I've done a quick google too but I couldn't find anything either. I agree with Mabel that it looks like a stylised shepherd and shepherdess in the middle. To me it looks like on the left side - the shepherds side are domestic animals - sheep and goats etc, but on the right side, the shepherdesses side, it looks like wild animals to me - a squirrel and maybe a hedgehog, a hare and a deer/doe

I hope you find it!

I think you're right Arianwen, that would also explain the squirrel!

I too thought they were a shepherd and shepherdess and tried Googling all kinds of search combinations to no avail. I didn't notice that one side is domestic and the other wild. Good catch!

That's so funny about the santas as a quilt applique but a cross stitch too. Thank you both! Moira Blackburn designed the sampler directly below the one I'm interested in, but not mine. :tantrum: I also sent the pic to 123stitch, but they aren't familiar with it.

I do wonder if it's a pattern from Sampler & Antique Needlework magazine.

I stitched the Merry Christmas, 5 Santa design many years ago (still comes out every Christmas) I'm not sure if I still have the chart but if you are interested I would have a search and mail it to you.

I don't know if it matters at this point, but I did an image search of the second pic of all the samplers on the wall and that picture came up about a dozen times on Pinterest. I don't know if that's a lead or not.

Athalie, thank you for the offer, but I was just looking for the others in the small hope that they were all by the same designer. But I appreciate it!

Allyn, yep, I've done the same thing. It was taken by a photographer in an historical house in Illinois, USA. I'm too far to drive to the house, pull it off the wall, and look on the back. Ooops, I wouldn't do that!

Is it possible to contact the owners of the house and ask if they have the information you need? It might be difficult if it is private owners, but if it is a home that is open to the public for tours there may be a foundation which would have the information. I'd try that. I know that some historic homes even have charts and or kits available.

I would have suggested exactly what Carole said....contact them to see what info they might have. I'd even contact them if it is a private house. If someone in the house stitched it, they'd know what pattern it is. It's worth a shot. Even if it ends up a bust, it'll be a little adventure in the process. :)

Brilliant idea! How come I didn't think of that?? Hopefully it's a house open to the public. I'll have to contact the photographer first to find out exactly where it's at. Or she may have that info on her site. I'll let y'all know if this avenue pans out.

Edited to say I noticed the comments on Flickr where this photo is stored, and it turns out the pic was taken at a bed & breakfast in Palatka, Fl., USA. The photographer mentioned the inn keeper's wife had done the needlework. So, I've sent the photographer a Flickr-mail and a comment asking her the name of the B&B. I cannot find this B&B online yet. Hopefully it's still open. :whoop:
