hoe do you bind the edge of your fabric?

Post by MikiStitch »

I have aida fabric and use a white thread to do a angled stitch over two holes. It looks like two sides of a triangle.

What stitch do you use to cut down on unraveling?

I use my sewing machine to do a zigzag along the sides of my fabric. Takes less than 2 minutes to do the whole thing!

I use Fray Check - its a type of soluble glue that you apply to the edge of the fabric and let it dry and it stops the fabric from fraying while you work on it. I find it washes off when I wash my project (I have found anyway)

Depends on the size of the project (and, therefore on the length of time it's likely to be hanging around). A big - lengthy - project I'll use an edging stitch on my sewing machine, a small one will be done with masking tape. When I began stitching I would hand bind the edges but found this too lengthy a process.

I'm another one that uses Fray Check. It's simple, quick and easy.

I'm also one that uses masking tape to bind edges.
Quick and easy, I keep a roll on the table next to my stitch chair.
If I had a sewing machine, I would use that.

Most often, I don't do anything because my fabric is tucked up under my Q Snap cover so it stays protected and doesn't unravel.

I use Fray Check, though the last few pieces of fabric I've bought have been from my LNS and they sew up the edges for me which is fantastic.

Fabric I buy at my LNS is stitched by the owner and that is lovely. Fabrics not stitched I do what Maggie does: use masking tape or fold the fabric under my Q-Snap cover and don't worry about the edges. On afghans I just let the edges turn into fringe.

Well I'm not a hoe but :-P I use material medical tape (it's easier on the fabric than masking tape but does just as good a job).

I glue mine with craft glue. Some of my projects have been on the go for 4 or 5 years and the glue has held up well to the test of time. I usually have well over 3 inches of spare fabric around the edge of my stitching so when they're finished, I can simply cut off the crispy glued edge :) OH finds it amusing when I get a new piece of fabric and have it clothes-pegged to a curtain rail, dangling down with three sides glued

Masking tape for me. I always cut off the sticky bit anyway, and it holds up pretty well.

If I owned a sewing machine that was available (and knew how to use it!), I'd probably sew the edges. But I don't, so masking tape it is.

For small pieces I normally hand-sew a whip stitch around the edge, for larger pieces I use the sewing machine zig-zag stitch.

I use masking tape. I've considered using Fray Check but wasn't sure how good it was.

I usually use an evenweave like Jobelan or a linen. I don't sew the edges. If I buy the fabric for a project from my LNS, they serge it; but if I use my own fabric, I don't do anything to the edges. I use scroll rods so the edges of my fabric don't get 'handled' so there is very little, if any, fraying.

I have a serger (overlock machine) and I serge the edges of my girlfriend's fabric for her. She uses Q-Snaps so her fabric gets handled a lot more and she had a lot of fraying before I started prepping her fabric for her.

I haven't used Fray Check on my needlework fabric, but I've used it when sewing. It's quite sturdy stuff. . . .almost like a glue that 'seals' the raw edge of the fabric.
