need your help :)

Post by Jilly »

Has anyone got a tiny scrap of soluble canvas that they could put into cold, non soapy water to see how long it takes to dissolve, I am hatching a plan, and need to know roughly how long it would last in a river.
Very many thanks

It is all rather strange, and I hope I don't upset anyone.
My Dad died over 4 years ago, and my brother will not listen to what my dad wanted done with his ashes, so, to cut a long story very short, I am wondering if I could cross stitch something suitable in soluble canvas, so that my Dads ashes could be put into it, and that placed in the river, my brother has a problem with scattering him, as I said, all very unusual.

I think that's a wonderful and sensitive solution! Not at all strange but a great piece of lateral thinking! That way I hope everyone is happy.

I have some Jilly and I can pop you some in water but, we go away for the weekend in the morning and I think it would be better if I waited 'till I come home to do the experiment. Alternatively, I can put some in the post to you.

The only reservation about your plan is, what happens to the thread when the canvas dissolves. I would hate it to get tangled around some wildlife.
Other than that, it sounds like a great idea.

Ohhh! good point Midge  he was very into nature and would have hated something to happen like that.
Using very , very short lengths may work, and keep the individual motifs tiny, I am thinking Egyptian symbols, his other great love :D

So do you want me to post you some? or do the experiment when I return on Monday?
I'll need your addy.
Short lengths should be ok and cotton is bio-degradable with time.

i don't have any either.
lovely sentiment..
and my first that was also the string being left to get tangled.

short lenths to tie it or use something from nature..like long grass to tie it.

and short lengths to stitch should be ok i agree.

lovely idea and i hope everything works out to everyone's favor.

What a lovely idea. Its strange because my Dad died last year and we've still to scatter his ashes and it was really praying on my mind this morning. Then I read your post. We are going to go to a river too, where he used to love to fish.

How about stitching a message in dried grass? That would just drift away harmlessly as the canvas dissolves.

It's here  Thank you so much Midge
I dropped a bit in cold water and it took about 5 mins to turn smushy, I will try some under a running tap to see what it does in running water, need to get my thinking cap on now :thinks:
Very many thanks again Midge

Jilly, if you need more of the aqua squishy material, I have some and you are welcome to use it too, so don't worry about experimenting!
