This is a beautifil pattern and I love the way you are working it. I would say no it does not need a gold base. I really think that it is great as it is.

This is gorgeous, well done!
And I certainly don't think it needs the gold base on the bottom, I agree with Jess in that the base looks too bold/wrong compared to the rest of the picture.
Oh how beautiful! I think it can definitely stand on its own without further gold at the bottom -- as for the backstitching, you will have to have a good look at it and decide which "look" you like best, the crisply defined one or the subtle unoutlined one, and then either frog or backstitch as you think is best; the perfect finish on this is the one that you will be happy looking at!
What a pretty project, how could you get fed up with this one (Only joking - I'm trying to complete an old WIP at the moment and getting really cheesed off with it - so I know the feeling!). I agree with Mabel's advice - go for whichever look you prefer. Seeing it in real life will always be different than from a photograph and you've made a lovely job of it so far.

hhhhhmmmmmm the backstitching is an interesting dilemma. This one could go either way. They both look good. I personally like to have a picture that is very defined, so would go with the backstitching. Buth this one does tend to look just as good with out any backstitch. It is a beautiful pattern and you have stitched it up wonderfully.
