Up until this moment I was sure that when a square has two symbols in it a line running through them it means that each symbol represents a 1/4 of a stitich so in total this square will have a half stitich made of two colors. But now I'm not so sure anymore....
Can it be that each symbol represents half a stitch?????
All of the patterns I have done (that have 2 symbols in the same square) I make half stitches with those so that the entire box is filled. I think it gives better coverage but that is just me. What does the pattern instructions tell you??? There should be some clue from the designer. Some are good at giving you directions some are not so good. I would read through the instructions and see if you can find an answer.
If you are looking for some one to help change you, look in the mirror
for me it depends if there is back stitch as well. If there is a backstitch running through the cell then I do 2 quarters and use the backstitch to make up the rest of the cross.
However see what you think looks good and what suits the design you are stitching.
When I've done these kind of stitches, I've decided which colour is the 'main' one - foreground, and done 3/4 of the stitch with that, and 1/4 with the 'background' colour - like if it's an outline of something that needs a fractional stitch I've done 3/4 in that colour and just 1/4 in the background colour..... hope that makes sense
Thank you for the helpful answers. It's good to know that these things are a little more flexible than I thought. I will leave these squares to the end and see what works best!
I usually see which colour is the dominant colour, or dominant shadow, picture etc. For instance, if the half stitch was at the edge of say a flower, and the other half was background, then I only do 1/4 stitch for the background, this helps it stand out from the background, and to me adds to making it seem more 3D, rather than 2D, same applies to shadows within the focal image, whatever it is. Does that make sense?? Hope so, it's so hard to put into words what is so much easier to show in person!!
