back update -- advice needed please

Once again thank you all for rallying round -- I told DH about it and after reading a few of the posts he said "what a lovely group of people they are!" He was particularly taken with your advice, Pengwenn .
KK, I'd very much like to take you up on your offer of drafting a letter to the NHS; I hadn't really considered it, but he had two students there too, and they are going to think this is a suitable "bedside manner" ! So I'd be very grateful for your help.
I've been looking into acupuncture and some time ago talked to Carolyn about it (wrote to her recently but haven't heard back yet -- when I do I'll let you know!), who is also a Christian and had acupuncture, so I'm at the moment just getting information together. I will need to be assured in myself that any treatment I go for doesn't go against my conscience or it may make me feel worse even if it helps the pain -- I hope that doesn't sound too confusing

Mabel what a horriable thing to say. About 15 years ago my back hurt and the doctor couldn't sort it and I went ot see an ostepath he talked to me and then examined me and he diagnosed a problem with my pelvis, aparantly it had twisted out of alignment. He worked on it over several weeks and finally it was put right.

With my current back problems I am having acupuncture which helps.

But I think you should go back and see your GP and explain it to them. Don't let it get you down there is a solution out there somewhere.

Oh Mabel What a terrible attitude to display, but sadly, some have no bedside manner at all. The consultant who told my Dad he had motor neurone disease was very much like that, no empathy and very dismissive.

I would recommend an osteopath for back problems. I've had treatment locally and he was brilliant. He was totally honest as well, told my MIL that he was unable to treat her and she needed a specalist for her condition (and she did it is very rare, even the specialists aren't able to treat it), and when I thought I needed more treatment, he told me I would be fine and he was right!

The thing I really wanted to mention to you is the constant pain killers. They can actually be a contributing factor.

I really hope you can get something worked out, you shouldn't have to put up with this constant pain or that DR's bad attitude.

Well I'm appalled at the consultant's response! He was obviously showing off to this students!


On a lighter note as you've had all the advice already on here and I can't add anything useful I thought you might like this!!

When I was nursing there was a wonderful cartoon drawn by a patient on the clinical room door!

There was a picture of a surgeon leaning over a patient on the operating table. He was saying...

"Well if you ask my opinion I'd say it was your Appendix but if you would like a 2nd opinion I'd say it was your Gall Bladder!"

TB, you're right about the painkillers, I kept taking them because I hoped this appointment would come up with a solution, but I definitely want to get off them as soon as I can, which is why I want to look into ways of pain management as well as going back to my GP. *goes off to read long-winded and very much appreciated pm *

I agree with what was said about painkillers: unfortunately, your body gets so used to them, that you need to up the dosage yto get relief.
On another note: what does faith have to do with any healing technique? I mean, you don't have to be a buddist to do yoga or have acupuntuce, do you? Or believe in anything else to go to an alternate medicine practice. There's nothing there that says you have to do or believe in anything different if you want to consult with a another type of medicine.
(too bad you live so far, I'd recommend my GP to you, he's very good at diagnosting illnesses.)

Hada, you've asked a very good question about faith and particular treatments and I'd like to try and answer it but it would be a bit long for the forum -- is it OK if I pm you?

As others have said, I suggest an osteopath but one who also does acupuncture. My back problem is completely cured, but on his advice I go back once every 3 months or so for. as he calls it, a top up to prevent any reoccurence. My late wife had severe pain caused by post herpetic neuralgia (post shingles) and was also helped considerably by an acupuncturist.

You have every right to ask to be seen by a different consultant, go for it.
