I am glad to know you have been to China. Next time, if you pay a visit to Nanjing, where I live. I should be your guide and treat you
If I ever have the chance to return, I may just take you up on that very kind offer! I live in Canada, so maybe I can return the favour if you visit here.
I remember that our guide on the trip through China explained that speaking another language was very important at the time, because of the new tourist industry. People from all over the world were starting to come to China, so guides were needed who could speak their language. Our guide travelled with us for the whole trip, and we met a different guide in each city who told us about the area and showed us the sights there.
We also visited a primary school, where the children welcomed us by singing a song. They were very surprised when we all stood up and sang one too! It was a children's song about farm animals, with all the different sounds the animals make. The children laughed and clapped for us. I don't think anyone had ever sung back to them before!
Another thing that impressed me was the great respect for older people. One woman on our trip was about 70 years old and one day she decided to rest on a bench while the rest of us toured a temple. When we came back, there were about 15 young people sitting in a circle around her, asking questions and listening very closely to her answers.
Everyone was very curious about tourists and very friendly to us. Many people, especially the students in Shanghai, wanted to speak to us so they could practice English.
Today, I'm sure everyone is used to having tourists visit, especially after the Olympics.
