Strategy for floss sale

Post by Dobby »

OK. JoAnns fabrics is having a sale on floss this weekend. I have all the floss for upcoming projects, so I thought I would just fill in some of the gaps in my stash.

So, do you purchase by color group (like all the blues you're missing) or just go in numerical order? The limit is 30 skeins at a time, but I suppose you could go in at separate times during the day. Last time they had a sale I went for reds and greens for Christmas projects.

Thanks,
Pam

I started building up my collection with bundles of colours which took my fancy, then after I'd inadvertently bought doubles of some colours I went for the numerical option.

I usually go by number unless there's a color that catches my eye. That way, you know which ones you already have and can just go down the rows of floss and grab the ones you don't have. As for going back, I've used my kids to buy floss before. My 4 year old DD loves to pay for items, so I'd give her a basket with the 30 skeins and the cash to have her pay. If DS is with me, he does the same before I go through the line. You could always take a bigger purse/bag with you, get your 30 skeins, pay for them then go back down the aisle to get your next 30.

I would go first thing in the morning with other half. Then both go back in the afternoon that way you can clear 120 threads. If you employ others you are a massive stash and grab raid.

Now that I'm back into cross stitching I must dig into my "Info" binder. I used to have order form copies from when I was in business selling the floss. I would circle everything in my bobbin bin, likewise for my backup skeins. Then when I went shopping it was easy to see what I was missing. Alternately I kept a form with my stitching basket and would circle any number I was getting low on. Either way I was always ready for shopping.

I went in numerical order and got what I needed and as a matter of fact the cashier is the one who told me that the only rule was I could only purchase 30 at a time and once I paid for the first 30 i was free to go back and get another 30 lol so that is what i did.

I will be doing exactly that the good thing is I have 2 stores fairly close to me so on my way home this morning I plan on hitting those 2 and then going back this afternoon to the one close by my house. Where there is a will there is a way!!

DMC website has a PDF copy of the order form to print out. Might help with your stash planning!!

I can't check until I get home in a day or two. I'm sure its all there the way I left it two or three years ago. I use Anchor so it will also check them, think they have it as well. A year ago I cleared out all those items that had been a pain in the patootie and I also need to take stock of what I actually still have in my bins and book section. Cross stitching life is well now that I have found this forum. There should be no more seven year rotations, the story of most of my cross stitching life.

Fair enough, but what do you use if the chart calls for ecru?

You know what's really sad? I know exactly what colour that is without having to look it up. That, and 414, 666, 321, 3770, 167, and of course the one everyone knows, 310!

Funny how some numbers/colours just stick in your head!

I've said before that when I have to process our customers' credit cards, the 3-digit security code more often than not makes me go "light blue-green", "dark purple", and so on -- and now I've started to do it with phone numbers! 824422 is obviously Very Dark Blue/Medium Gold :-)
