Just a quick update, now the afghan has been given to my friends. It all ended up being a bit fraught at the beginning. We contacted them to see when we could pop round and see the baby and they said at the time their weekend was going to be pretty upside down but invited us to Duncan's christening and reception. We weren't able to get to the church, but we went to the reception which was at a posh hotel.

Anyway, there was a table for presents, but I wanted to give them the afghan separately. I had wrapped it up and kept it under my chair at the table. Our friends were flying around trying to greet everyone and we only saw them for about 10 minutes. I handed over the parcel and had a few words, then she had to rush off and feed the baby and was gone for nearly an hour. He disappeared so we decided to go into the lobby and look for them as Simon had only just started his new job, this was Sunday afternoon and he had to leave at 4pm to drive the 90 miles back home so he could relax for the evening before going to work Monday. We found our friend Morton outside talking to his Dad and waited till they were done so we could tell him we had to go and found him very upset.

Apparently his parents who live in Scotland had come down for the weekend and the christening, knowing there were a lot of guests, a lot of organising to do and so on, but they had done nothing but complain since they arrived. Our poor friends were nearly in tears at the reception as his father was having such a go at them because the parents weren't getting to spend any time with Duncan the baby and when they were told they could visit any time they wanted, stay as long as they wanted and be with Duncan as much as they liked, they turned round and said something like "it's too far to come and we're here now!" And on it went. So our poor friends were trying to put a brave face on for the guests and getting earache the whole weekend.

Anyway, we went home and didn't hear anything from them for nearly a couple of weeks so Simon texted them and they've had nothing but stress and upset since we last saw them. I do think his parents are very unkind and selfish to take this attitude, spoiling the christening and spoiling their pleasure in their new baby. But she grovelled like mad and said she absolutely loves the afghan, so much thought has obviously gone into all the little animals and the tartan letters and she will cherish it, so I'm very pleased it's been so well received. Such a shame they're having such a lot of trouble with his family though.

We probably won't get to see them before Christmas now as this weekend is Simon's last visit to me before Christmas and I will be going to his place then, but we'll catch up with them in the new year and eventually get to see little Duncan properly.

What a shame when family who should be closest and most supportive make what should be a very special time, a misery! But they obviously really appreciated your lovely present, especially knwing how much work and thought had gone into it -- that must have been a spot of light in the midst of their family trouble!

Oh Sarah, how awful for your friends. The arrival of a baby and the christening should be such a happy time for the baby's parents. How unkind and thoughtless of baby's grandparents to upset their son and daughter- in-law. I know I will want to see my grandson and hold him and be with my elder son and his partner when their baby comes this month, but this is their child and I will go with the flow, there will be plenty of time to get to know our grandson.
I am sure that your Afghan was extra appreciated after all that upset.. you put a lot of effort and thought into a lovely, lasting gift for their little boy.

Its tough when there is conflict between family members. But on the up side its good to have great friends. Like they say, you don't get to choose your family members like you do your friends, your stuck with who you've got!!!
I'm sure the afghan was a great pick me up!!

Such a shame for your friends family think they can say anything and get away with it. I bet the gift was so special at a difficult time.

As you say once all the holidays and such have settled down you will get a load of time to coo over the baby. :baby:

I'm so glad they loved this Sarah. I bet they do treasure it and it was well appreciated by them.
Sad about the upset with the family. Hope they get it resolved soon. :(
