HAED - Summoning Old Friends *Updated 10.5.10*

Post by burgundyice »

Well the evening after finishing Queenie I made a start on my second HAED. I've got this one and a couple of others to begin in a page-by-page rotation, as I don't think my brain can take the intensity of working on just one project anymore!

This is called Summoning Old Friends by Carrie Hawks
Image

From reactions I've had from people at work I think some people are surprised/bemused or freaked out by the picture, but OH and I both like it (I do love Most Haunted and those kind of things after all). OH likes it better than Queenie! Plus the "real" cat looks very like mine :)

I had a disaster with this at the beginning - wanted to have a go with 32ct, tried one and 2 strands with tent stitch, decided that although 2 strands looks lovely, it would get far too tight in confetti areas (and there are a lot in this), so went for one, feeling pleased and thinking how much less floss it'll use. But did about an hour's work and wasn't happy - I couldn't see the holes, and the worst thing was the one strand made the colours look washed out. I mean I don't mind doing confetti stitches because we all know the shading on HAEDs is fantastic, but couldn't see the point if I wasn't going to be able to see the effect of the confetti anyway! Was very distraught!

Gave it up as a bad job and restarted on 28ct with two strands - was a hundred times better! I think I've found my ideal fabric :) And managed to re-home the 32ct with Mabel!

So here is half of the first page -
Image
these are large-format pages, and only about 50% of the number of stitches in Queenie, so pleased at how much of the picture is emerging already :D Although there are LOADS more colours and confetti than Queenie had, so it's slower work.
Going to finish the rest of the page and then make a start on one of my others

Great, a fellow HAED-rotator! :D

This one is lovely, Louise, I remembering seeing it when I was trawling through hundreds of designs on the HAED site. I don't think it's freaky at all, more dreamy in a way. I'm going to enjoy watching you stitch this and I can't wait to see what else you're going to start on!

Slower work, she says  that's a great start considering you'd already started it before and had to redo it all! The picture isn't my style and I'd feel rather uncomfortable with it on my wall, but "so many people, so many tastes" as we say back home, and if you both enjoy it, great :-)!

great work well done i think the only bit that 'freaks' me out is the skulls...not too keen on any tpye of bones/skelitons....but the kittys are very sweet and make it a nice freaky picture...if you get what i mean

I think it is a great design. I like the idea of it. Glad you got the size worked out so that you can be happy with the final result. Looking forward to seeing more HAED's popping in.

I love it, but it's not the type of thing I'd have onmy walls (simply because I don't "do" animal pictures). Looking forward to watching your progress. :)

I quite like this design and knowing you, it will still stitch up rather quickly even with doing rotations!

As for the fabric, well sometimes it takes that experimenting to come up with the perfect solution! Glad it worked out well!!

Look forward to seeing this one progress!! :applesauce:

Great to see your new start. Although they are different shades I see that you are starting off with colours that you will feel at home with after your last amazing work.
How exciting will it be to use greens!!!

Yay, new HAED!!!

You're getting as bad as Sarah with your idea of slow starts    That's fantastic progress.

The pattern is really interesting. As others have said, I probably wouldn't have it on my walls personally but it's the sort of thing I love to look at in art galleries. Look forward to seeing it come together

Ooh nice design, and what a different style from Queenie!

You have made great progress, and you'll be at the ghostie cats in no time at this rate.

It must be nice to be stitching with different shades of threads. Looking forward to seeing more of this :)

Great progress, and a great chart too. Not one I would stitch myself, but I really like spooky things, so I look forward to seeing your progress on this!

Looks like I've divided opinions about it on here as well as at work!
To me it's one of those that you need the title next to it to understand/appreciate it properly (yes, I will be stitching the title at the bottom, but not sure if that script style lettering I used before will fit!) - otherwise it's just a cat surrounded by ghosts. If you know that she (for it's described as a she on Carrie Hawks' website) has done a spell to bring back her old friends for a visit... I think it's a lovely idea, they're not scary ghosts then!

I will probably finish the page in the next few days, am up to 40 colours already  (where have my pages and pages of black gone??!!) and have reached the first ghosty cat already - page 2 has his face! After that I really think I should be kind and do a page of one of the two pieces I've made a little start on that have been sitting in a canvas bag hanging on the back of my door since April, probably Once Was Innocent - purples!!

40 colours in the first page! I bet you can't wait to get to the ghostie cat's face - they have beautiful eyes, don't they? I really love this one, it's just my sort of thing.

You mentioning the mixed reactions to it reminded me of when I did Predator - some said they loved it, some thought it was scary and some thought it was a strange choice of subject to stitch, but it's great that we're all different.

Once Was Innocent is lovely too - I'm finding it great rotating various HAEDs, you never get bored, so am looking forward to seeing yours too.
