Knitting query for 4ply wool

Post by wendywombat »

I know that a great many of you knit as well as stitch so I hope someone here can help.

I've bought some 4ply pure wool and my question is this.

I cannot find a pattern for a cardigan/jacket for 4ply so how can I adapt a double knitting pattern so I can use the 4ply? Or does any one know where I might find a pattern on line, either a downloadable pdf or to buy?

There are so many 'experts' here some one is bound to know the answer! :D

Thanks girls!

If I was trying to use a double knit pattern for 4 ply wool I would look at the tension on the double knit chart to see how many stitches and how many rows to and inch. You could then do a tension test with your wool but you would need to use smaller needles, so if the pattern said use size 10 and 8 for dounble, for 4ply you would use 11 and 9. It may work out that you could just follow the instructions for a larger size. Hope this makes sense

The other option is to try to explain to me what sort o cardigan jacket you want to knit, eg, waist length or longer, stocking stitch or pattern, raglan or set in sleeves and I would be willing to get you a couple of patterns and post to you, just pm me if I can help

Here are a few that I have in my favourites, not sure if any will help but you should enjoy looking if nothing else. What exactly are you wanting to knit as I have quite a few patterns and may be able to help.

Thanks Minij and Rosemary for you help! Sorry not to have got back sooner!

Minij... I've read your explanation on calculations and that's very helpful. :applesauce:
Thanks also for you offer of looking for a pattern, I appreciate that but my friend who lives in the Cotswolds is doing just that for me. If she doesn't score may I take you up on your kind offer? I'll p/m you later with that.

Rosemary..
I'm going to to take a while to get through those sites, they look really helpful. Ta ever so!

What I want to do is fairly simple as I cannot knit lacy stuff! Cables and ribby stuff's fine but I always lose stitches when I knit hole!
I have some random dyed wool so heavy pattern would be lost. So a simple high neck or v-neck, must have pockets and be hip length. I'm happy with any type of sleeve top, raglan or set in not important. :D

HI all,

Wendy, how's the project going?

Rosemary, I had a look at those websites, great stuff.

I'm in the midst of knitting a cardi but haven't touched it over Christmas. But then it's summer in Oz so I won't need it for some time!

All the best for 2010.

The cardi is going well. I spent ages looking at the freebies patterns then a friend from the UK had just the right 4ply pattern sent over to me and I've done the back and almost one side of the front. :D :D

The wool is lovely to knit up, and the random colours are evolving really well! I'll get a finished photo up as soon as!!

I shall keep looking at those freebie patterns though as there were quite a few really nice ones! :applesauce:

A Happy New Year to you too Nanners! :toast:
