how to keep fabric from fraying?
I would like to stitch some bookmarks on fabric and cut them out, but I am concerned about them fraying when I'm done. I've heard fray-check will discolor the fabric. Any suggestions?

Hi Kaycee,
The only bookmarks I've done have been on aida bands which have a border on them so they don't fray.
Sewandso and other craft shops sell a range in different widths and counts.

I've then backed them with felt, which has taken care of bottom and end fraying. However, I would think, if you want to cut from other fabric, mounting on card or otherwise sewing backing on would work and you can use masking tape whilst stitching to control fraying then.
And just spotted Pengwenn has a topic on finishing bookmarks about two below this one. I'm a computer idiot so useless at linking but sure someone else will be able to do it.

I also find when stitching that the edges of my fabric keeps fraying. End up with threads getting caught really easily. I've found masking tape on the edges ends if scratching my whilst I stitch!! Any other suggestions?

Fray check doesn't always discolour the fabric.
Aida bands are brilliant.
Also hemming is a good way to prevent fraying.

I actually stitch around the edges of the fabric like this:

It works like a charm! It takes 5-10 minutes depending on how big your fabric is, but it's so worth it.

A narrow zig zag or satin stitch by machine is my choice edge either while in progress or for bookmark edges.

Brilliant idea about stitching round the edges - will have to try it.

Thanks so much for this idea Jess ~ I hadn't even thought of this!

my local xs shop serges the edges of fabric that you buy since it is cut to your specs right then. i love it.
as for bookmarks, i typically fray the edges myself by pulling about 3-5 block out on all sides.

If you have a serger or sewing machine I think that is the best way, either serge or zigzag around.
There is the next best choice-fray check
Then hand sewing around the edge as shown above.
I think my least favorite choice would be masking tape.
