Kell's Basket of Biscornu Challenge

Post by kell »

After watching the wonderful Basket of Biscornu blog last year, I decided to take up that challenge myself this year and make one biscornu each month so that at the end of the year I'll have a dozen lovely little biscornu decorations for my Christmas Tree.

For me, "Biscornu Week" will be 8th-14th of the month (so I'll just work on fro UFO week - LOL!), so I have begun work on my first biscornu of the year.

I'm using a pattern from this year's Pattern-a-Day calendar - I've skipped ahead and am using the one from 3rd December (well, the central part - I'm leaving off the outer section as the biscornu would otherwise be too big). I'm using some of the Madeira silks I won from getting my little boat stitch published in one of the cross stitching magazines. :)

Biscornus makes lovely ornaments since they are so colorful and 3-D....I have put some up on the tree this year and .....some are so lovely that I don't dare use them as pin cushions. LOL Looking forward to seeing what kind of biscornu u make each month! :)

I popped the first biscornu I'd ever made on the tree this year and it looked lovely if I say so myself. That was what made me resolve to make more of them for next year. :)

This is very exciting. I googled Basket of Biscornu after you'd mentioned it before and found the blog. It sounds like a super idea. Good luck!!

what a great idea. i too googled the blog and what a wonderful site. biscornu have intrigued me since joining this website and expanding my xs world but i couldn't see much purpose in them. i knew i wouldn't be using as a pincushion and i hate clutter for horizontal surfaces...i have too much of that already without making more!

ornaments seem ideal and what great gifts for this purpose. ugh....more wips!

THey make wonderful gifts - I made a 15-sided one with beads all over it for my Step-Mum's Xmas this year - I stuffed it with lavender so she could use it as a pomander or a sleep aid. :)

front and back views

Design: From 2010 Pattern-a-Day Cross Stitch Calendar (3rd December)
Materials: 18-count ecru Aida; Madeira silks 0801 12, 1003 13, 1803 12; white ribbon; snowflake buttons; Minicraft supersoft toy filling

My first biscornu of the year for my Basket of Biscornu challenge. I used only the central part of the design from my Pattern-a-Day Cross Stitch Calendar for 3rd December and chose to stitch it in Madeira silks in soft pastel shades of blue, lilac and silvery grey. On the reverse, I left one quarter of the central design unstitched and instead stitched "Kell January 2010"

I plan to stitch my name, the month and the year on each of my twelve biscornu.

The zig-zag border on both the front and reverse are stitched in two strands, but the rest of the design and the texgt is all stitched in a single strand.

ETA: I've removed the picture of the calendar page (even though it wasn't the pattern side) as apparently it could be enlarged and used as the lattern as it's a simple design (sorry admins, I never even thought of that!).

So very pretty!! I think using such a small count will make these look very dainty indeed. Clever Kell!! :applesauce: :applesauce:

What a lovely idea. I'm not sure what I'd do with biscornu myself, already having sufficient sachets in my drawers, ornament projects to keep me going and a dislike of clutter. Will look forward to seeing you stitch these though.

It's beautiful, Kell! A great start to your basket. I love the snowflake buttons; very appropriate for the current weather!

Wow! That is lovely!

I choose a simple design for my January biscornu because I have a cute button to put on it. It will look great for my tree this year. I am half way done stitching it up. :D

I actually don't have a basket at this point - I shall have to get one, or a box or something for them!
