It depends on the type of card you want to use. Sylvia always used those with the window in the centre 'page' which you could then fold the left hand part over so that the stitching was between the two 'pages'.

This is how you do it. Once you have positioned the stitching in the window, then use a double sided sticky paper tape so that one side holds the stitching in place, then when you remove the backing from the tape you fold the left hand page over in order to seal the stitching between the two 'pages'.

I hope that explains it ok. Good luck.

The cross stitcher magazine regularly has an explaination on how to do this with aperture cards, they are the ones with the windows cut already.

I also use a plain card, fray the edges, stick it on thin card the size of the piece (minus the frayed edges) with glue, then double sided sticky tape onto card...or I cut the piece and edge it with ribbon, again attach with glue.

There are some done this way in my gallery, page 2..

I have bought two versions of the double sided sticky tape, one here, one in Scotland (thinking it must be better  ) - but I always make a mess of it. See, I can't properly cut it, and it becomes a little knot by the time I want to pull off the plastic cover...
Not for me! I use the hobby-shop universal glue, it's a white liquid but it dries into an invisible film. It is only not working with thin cardboard because it is water based, and makes the paper wrinkled.

hmm, sounds weird. Mine is like ordinary tape, it''s got white peel off paper just in a roll. So when you cut it, it holds its shape. Then you stick it down before you peel the white cover off. Then you pull the white paper off and bingo, a sticky side just sitting on the final thing waiting to have somnething stuck on it.

i found this on UK ebay, this is what it looks like

from reading your post it sounds like you are taking the backing off straight away instead of when you have positioned it. It''s a wonder you haven''t got yourself stuck to the furniture

Mine comes off the roll sticky on one side, and with paper backing on the other. If I'm using it to stick stitchig into an aperture card, I use the narrow type, cut small pieces and stick them round the aperture on the inside of the card (this is for circular ones, for square ones you can cut the tape to the lengthof the sides of the square), remove the backing and place it over the stitching, hovering just over it until I've got the placing right, then pushing it down.

For frayed patches I go about it slightly differently, as it is important to get the tape right up to the corners, but measurin exact lengths is time-consuming and often goes wrong. So here's what I do: fray your patch. Cut a piece of double-sided tape (with the backing still on) roughly the right length for the stitching. starting in one corner, stick it along the edge. You will be left with a bit of uncovered fabric at the bottom end of that edge. Peel off the backing and cut another piece of tape. Starting in the corner that was left uncovered after doing your first side, once again align the tape along the edge. Once again you will be left with a bit of uncovered fabric at the end. keep going until you've done all four sides, and now all corners should be covered right to the very tip without any accurate measuring! (hope this makes sense...)

Agi, I was wondering when you mentioned your iron-on interfacing was fluffy and you use it for padding -- could it be that you mean wadding? Iron-on interfacing is more like a sheet of thin papery fabric which you iron on to the back of fabric to stiffen it and also to be able to cut it without it fraying (e.g. when you want to put it into a coaster or make a bookmark out of it)

Oh, thank you, Mabel, yes, wadding it is - I don't know what happened to my English vocab these days... I forget everything. :(
So, how do you cut wadding?? :)

I hoped you wouldn't ask... :-) My pieces always end up rather ragged, but as they are generally just to pad cards a bit it doesn't really matter. So I shall leave this question to people who quilt, and who must be cutting wadding into exact shapes practically every day :-)!

Oh, and yes, about the tape.... my problem is cutting. My scissors can't - none of them - cut it properly - that's when it starts to behave like chewing gum.... stretch, knot up, misbehave.

You could try cutting it with a craft knife -- unroll some from the roll, place it paper side down on a cutting mat, and cut. That might prevent it from squashing up, although you'll probably have to clean the knife blade (carefully!) after every few cuts as you''ll be cutting into the sticky side.

oh dear, you need new scissors because you wont be cutting that wadding if they dont cut tape!

Use a template, make one from ordinary paper, no need to spend $$ on fancy equipment. Stick the paper onto some card, or just make the template from card and then hold it on the wadding in place with something like a paper clip or even a hair clip, they wont stretch but if you pin it on with ordinary pin, then it will change the shape sometimes it puckers a bit..

This is what i do and it works fine, just be patient and do it in good light

I just read mabels post...your wadding sounds different from mine.

I didn't mention wadding in my earlier post as I don't think Sylvia always used it. I think she only did for 'special' cards say for our boys, and then she always got me to do it, as with putting the stitching into the cards. I don't know where she bought it but it looks like a very flimsy gauze. I usually cut a piece a bit smaller than the stitching and place it in the centre so that when the final card is stuck in place it pushes the stitching out a bit giving it that padded look.

You do need sharp scissors though Agi. :)
