french knots

i always struggle doing french knots and they always end up to big.

any advice?????

And my best advice is to just practice on a spare piece of fabric. I found I got better at them the more I did

I agree. I practice a little bit on a spare cloth before doing them on the actual project because it is so far between french knot attempts (sometimes up to a year as I do them as the final touch on a project when needed, after backstitching). After doing about 20 of them quickly on a spare fabric (you don't need to worry about placement), you should get the hang of it.

I hate doing French knots and usually use tiny seed beads instead to get round it.

i will get a peice of fabric and pratice but the beads are a very good idea too.

Oh dear now I'm getting worried because I really like doing french knots!!

Don't worry, Sue, I don't mind doing them either - my problem is, though, if I make 4, they will all be different - slant in different directions, and I cannot always place them where I want. So perhaps I still cannot do them?

I quite like doing french knots, although I've never had to do a whole lot at once. That might put me off a bit!
I found holding the thread quite tight as I pulled the other through, helped alot with getting them of a similar size and keeping them looking fairly neat and regular.

I like doing french knots and they may not be the same size but I think that is part of the fun of doin them.

You can find very good video tutorials on just about any stitch imaginable here -- and the blog is worth reading too!

I remember coming to the end of one of my first projects and noticing the french knot at the very last moment. I spent a while trying to figure out what one was in the first place and then more time practising them... I'm still not great at it but it's passable.

I like the idea of the beads though. Adds a nice touch too.

I just managed to do some french knots for the first time.

I actually typed in french knots on Ytube and checked out some of the examples there.

Mind you, I am still hopeless as I had to do them right handed and I'm a lefty but that's my next practice session to see if I can reverse the instructions and manage to get knots more comfortably

As a right handed person I hadn't really thought about how hard it was to get good tutorials if you are left handed. I should have though, as my hubby is left handed and I can see how things generally, like writing and measuring etc are all harder.
I googled to see if anyone did left handed french knots, but nothing came up.
