Black, black and more black!!!

Post by Vani »

As you can see from my subject line I need to know about working with Black 310. My next project that I have lined up and am super excited to do is:

Image

As you can see she has a lot of black, which I am ok with doing, I think it adds a nice contrast to her! But what I am worried about is coverage. I like to work on 25 ct Lugana. I already have some white 25 ct lugana at home. What I would like to know from all you experienced stitchers out there is, Will I get good coverage with the 25 ct lugana using the black, or will the fabric show through. I will be stitching 1 over 1 full crosses.
I would love to hear from you all, as I don't want to start the project and then down the road not be happy with it.

I think stitching 1 over 1 in full crosses on 25ct will certainly give a good coverage.

Speaking as a terribly lazy person  would it be an idea to do it on black lugana? It would save a lot of stitching :-) although you'd need to make sure the white got good coverage.

Is that background all flat, straight 310 black??? Bravery knows no bounds.

I suspect you will get better coverage with black stitches on white fabric, rather than white stitches on black fabric, unfortunately. Do you have some black fabric you could experiment with?

I am on the side of the 2 ladies that suggest working on black fabric.

I'm the opposite of everyone when it comes to stitching the background (but everyone probably already knows that considering all the frickin dark navy blue in catch a falling star and all the black in wrath)

I would experiment with the different fabric and strands to see what you like best. I do think the 1x1 on 25 count will probably be sufficient though. I used 3 strands on 18ct and it covers perfectly but can be a little difficult stitching the confetti stitches. Also, even if there were a little white poking through, when you look at it from a distance, you may not be able to notice it anyways.

I was thinking of doing it on black actually, but then had to think about how the white or the cream of the skin color would be on the black fab, like Serinde said. I am leaning towards white fabric, I think I may get the coverage I need! And I am thinking after a good washing the fab will shrink down around the black stitches just a smidgen.

I've been stitching quite a bit of black on my dogs project which is 28ct 1 over 1 full crosses and to be honest, the coverage isn't as good as I'd personally like.
I'd strongly recommend you trying it out first on scrap pieces a before you commit to that amount of work, so as you're sure your happy with it when you get started.

well i know im doing tt icemark from haed on black fabric but using 14 count instead of 18 ct as i couldnt find that here but anyhow it has a lot of lighter colors in it and im doing 2x1 and i dont care for it that much. Its for my 12 yr old and he thinks its awesomme so i still may start it over again.

I am currently doing 2 x 1 full crosses on 25 count fabric with my HAED - excellent coverage and I am using quite a bit of very dark blue and have just started with the 310 for the cat - cannot see any fabric at all. I have several photos in my gallery if you are interested.

Personal preference - I would not use black fabric - could make the design look off/uneven - but that could just be me imagining things.

I've stitched a little bit of black/navy blue in my fractals and my finished HAED QS which are all done on 25ct and I've used 1 over 1 on all with not a lot of problem with coverage. I find using a little less tension on the darker colours helps .

I have been going through my New Stitches magazines looking for something, and came across a very helpful bit of advice.

When you are stitching a design which includes a lot of black (as you are!), use a grey or neutral colour fabric rather than white, then the black will at least appear to cover better. Also, it might be a good idea to use three strands of black (and this goes back to discussions about the thinness, relatively, of black thread these days), instead of two on 14ct (2 strands instead on 16ct, etc).
