Question re Gridding with fishing line

I have never used gridding and would prefer to use fishing line rather than a pen. Does it come in different colours? I happen to have some from a different craft, but it is almost clear and doesn't really show up against the cream-coloured even weave fabric I will be using.

Also -- do you 'push it aside' when stitching (hard to do for the back) or just stitch over it? It would probably be easy to pull out, either way.

Yes you can get different colours, and different thicknesses.
I've never used it for gridding (I currently still use a washable pen), but would imagine it would be quite easy to remove from the material once you've finished your stitching.

We sold fishing lines for years in Canada and all we could get was blue or perhaps clear. Definitely many thicknesses depending on the size fish you were going after. The idea was for the line to disappear under water so the fish only saw the lure.

I imagine that it would be very similar to using waste canvas. Add the best and easiest way to stitch it would to go over the line and then at the end of the project pull the line from under the stitches. I would think it would pull quite easily.

I just checked out a local Walmart and found some lightweight, light green line. So I'll give that a try. It's still not really dark, but it does show up a bit better on the fabric than the clear.

I'm using red line at the moment but have blue in reserve. I was also given samples of green and black but they were too thin for my liking - they tangled up like you wouldn't believe.

Apparently it comes in different colours and weights but I don't know much about it. I DO, however have friends that fish who have told me never to buy any as they have loads (like me with threads I wonder?) of leftovers and part used reels or whatever they come on. These kind folk just gave me a few bits to try out and then more of the ones I liked. The big lot I've got came with a fishing magazine by look of the label on the spool.

I'm just stitching over it and I pulled out one row to test. Easy peasy. This works better for me than the pen on big pieces.

I use a coloured thread for gridding or even short left over strands of floss

I am going to try this, I think, on 28 ct. Do you think it will work on the higher counts?
I bookmarked your thread on this. I have to check out what kinds of fishing line I've got from my husband's supplies. He was an avid fisherman. Otherwise I'll hit the tackle shop and ask them which one they would recommend. It ought to make their day!

i think the diamiter is 0.20 mm so its fine but strong enough to pull and yes i think it would work great on higher counts
as its so fine
i bought mine of ebay went with 4 lb weight just to try but you can get it in higher or lower weights and different colours and i have to say i found this really easy to use and thread

instead I bought one of 0,25mm in green

I've used fishing lines on up to 40 ct. linen and never had any problems with it. I stitch over it, it's easy to pull out.

Cajun Line brand has really inexpensive (about $6 for 300 yards) red fishing line, which shows up great on any color fabric. It's what I'm using for Sephina's Secret. I got the 8lb weight because it was all they had in stock and it's fine enough to work with 18 ct aida and probably other counts as well. it's 0.279mm in diameter. But I wouldn't mind getting some thinner line when I can find it.

I'm currently using 4lb red fishing line... I can't find the spool to tell you the manufacturer, but I bought it at Gander Mountain. I'm liking it so far and only have to push it out of the way a bit. The next time I use it I'm thinking of doing more of the line on the top of the fabric instead of doing 6 on top, 4 on bottom because I try not to stitch over it as much as I can. I'm not so worried about being able to pull it out, but just prefer the look of the stitches when they aren't stitched over the lines. Other than that, I really like this method of gridding! I had previously used a length of 8lb line to mark the end of the page and had no problem pulling it out when I no longer needed it.

the fish line I wanted to buy was sold out, so I needed to search something else.
My little (:P he is 15 minutes jonger)) brother found some brown fish line in the barn and my father gave that to me

I don't know the diameter, but for the 14 count I'm doing now it is perfect. I think that it is to thick for the other counts. But than I will buy new fish line.

I really love the way the grid looks now. It is perfect visble.

My dad loves fishing and since he doesn't speak English when he was visiting me here I took him to outdoor shops to check out fishing gear and translate for him, so I ended up looking at a lot of fishing lines, and I remember seeing them in light or dark green, and in blue and in red too.

I might have to try that next time I grid, if it's faster than the washable pens.

Laura, I think the washable pens may be quite a bit faster to put on, but the fishing lines means you don't have to wash it afterward. Granted I haven't attempted with the marking pens because I prefer not to wash my pieces if I can avoid it.

I do tend to wash my pieces, especially since I mostly work in hand and wrinkle them quite a lot.
