1 x 1 or 2 x 1...... or 25 ct to 18 ct

Post by nuttystar »

I have recently bought my first HAED and I am really keen to get started. But in my haste I went ahead and bought the suggested 25 ct evenweave without really looking into my options.

The chart suggests that you can either do 2 x 1 or 1 x 1 on the 25 ct but I'm worried that 1 x 1 will not have enough coverage whilst 2 x 1 will be too messy. I could use 18 ct but I have no idea what size fabric I would need for the bigger design.

Can any of you offer any advice as to what I should do?? Does the 1 x 1 look OK? Is it better to go with 2 x 1?

Any help would be appriciated :)

Whenever I am changing the fabric count I use this calculator to help me figure out how much fabric I need. I use it so much I have it bookmarked in my favorites! :D

I would think 2 x 1 in full crosses would end up very bulky... have you considered 2 x 1 in tent stitch instead (makes it go twice as fast too!!) - my WIP of Once Was Innocent is 2 x 1 tent stitch on 25ct and I love it for a break from 28ct! I believe all of Sarah's HAEDs are 2 x 1 tent stitch on 25 too, looking at them should give you some idea of coverage.

I think I'd go for 1 over 1 on 25-count or 2 over 1 on 18 count doing full crosses. I think I'll be doing my storykeep on 18-count, but I'm not 100% sure yet, so I'll be seeing how it goes too.

I personally use 1x1 on 25ct - my suggestion is to do a couple of trials to see what you like either on a little piece of scrap fabric or off in one of the corners that will most likely be hidden by the frame.

This is the coverage I get on 25ct:

Haed's are great no matter what count you stitch them on, go over to the stitch-a-long and you will see many Haed's being stitched by our very talented girls, Lizzy did Snow Leopard on 18 count and further down her thread is a large picture of my Wolfish Friend also done on 18 count, both 2 x 1, but there are many more and all look beautiful, it is really what you prefer to stitch on, just remember to enjoy it because you will be stitching it for quite a while so be comfortable and love it!

If 1x1 on 25ct is just not cutting it, 1x1 on 28ct should probably be fine if you're OK with 28ct. Otherwise 2x1 on 18ct should be fine.

I do 2x1 on 18 ct and 1x1 on 22, 25 and 28 ct. I have tried tenting 2x1 on 28 ct and I didnt like it but that is just my preference I have lots of friends who love tenting. I have tried 2x1 on 22 ct and that is way to bulky for my liking but again you have to just try different things to see which works out better for you.

On my dogs I am working on 28ct, 1 over 1 full crosses. The coverage on colours are fine, but the black is a little skimpy for my liking. I found 2 over 1 too bulky though, so stuck with 1.
If you want to work on something like 18ct then 2 over 1 would look good I think and the only difference would be the size of your picture. If you look at Lizzy's snow leopard you'll see none of the detail is lost at all. So the fabric count really can be just whichever is your personal preference. :)

As I saw somebody mentioned, I'm doing all my HAEDs 2 over 1 tent stitch - if you want to see what the coverage is like the titles in my signature bar will lead you to the threads.

I'm doing mine on 28 count 1x1 and the coverage is great! That being said, if you're worried, maybe try it on a coloured piece of fabric, so that the bright white won't show through when using darker colours
